Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month!

Come and see our Hispanic Heritage Month book displays! The Adult fiction and non-fiction display is on the round wall near the front door and the Children's display is by the reference desk in the Children's department.

Every year from September 15 to October 15, we recognize and celebrate the heritage and culture of Hispanic and Latino Americans and recognize their contributions to the United States. Every year we remember how much richer we are for them. Gracias a ustedes, nuestros amigos hispanos!

A Hug for a Community in Hurt

We send our condolences and best wishes to you whose lives have been affected by the Riley Road forest fire.

We are here to help you find the resources you need to heal, recover, and move on. The library has computers, printers, scanners, meeting rooms, and the usual non-fiction and fiction items your would expect; children's programs, reference librarians to help you find resources, and a pleasant place to spend some relaxing time. Let us help you find the solutions you need.

We want you to use the library. So if you have lost your library card or identification, etc., please know that we will do everything we can to work with you.

Homework Resources

Moms and Dads! When school started today I found myself thinking about homework. How can we help you help your children and youths do their homework effectively?

Your kids are going to want to use online resources and their teachers are going to be very uncomfortable with the unreliable quality of information that comes off the web. Stay posted to this blog because over the weeks ahead I'm going to give you some good alternatives.

Databases. What's a database? In our case, a database is an authoritative online collection of books or articles from journals, newspapers, and magazines, or  maps and images that you can search, read on your computer, and use. By using your library card number as your username, you can access and use them for free and trust them to deliver good information at your child's grade level.

Free Job Search Seminars

Every month the Lone Star College Tomball side of our joint library hosts two free Job Search Seminars sponsored by Workforce Solutions. Tomorrow’s seminar [Wednesday, August 17] will be about interviewing and includes lab time for building a resume. The Interviewing seminar is from 1-3 pm; the Resume Lab runs from 3-4 pm. Both happen in room L-207 (the 'college lab') and to sign up all you need to do is drop by a reference desk or phone 832-559-4213.

Other seminars the organization runs include Creating a Resume/Completing the Application, and, Using the Internet.

Workforce Solutions is the local service delivery agency for the Texas Workforce Commission.

Alicia Mitchell exhibition in Meeting Room

Alicia Mitchell was born in El Paso and lived there until she retired. Even if you didn't know that, her paintings would have betrayed the fact that this artist is native to the desert. She has a wonderful command of both the subtle colors of the desert dryness and the brilliance that breaks out after a desert rain. Come and see her landscapes, still lifes, and portraits this month in our Meeting Room, L-129.
