Thank you for helping to make the 4th Annual Hispanic Heritage Festval held at the North Channel Branch Library such a success! We estimate that we saw over 1,000 children and adults this past Saturday! Fun was had by all: face painting and craft tables were especially popular! Ballet Folklorico danced, M.E.C.A. Mariachis sang and played, Happy the Clown entertained while Texas Edition performed and provided the sound system for our spectacular! A special thank you, also, to the local businesses who supported us and made this Festival come to life! And thank you's also to the Harris County Sheriff's Dept. for bringing Gizmo the Robot and to Bay Star Ambulance for letting the kids see the inside of their vehicle.

Need hours for Honor Society or for a class assignment? Consider volunteering at the North Channel Branch Library! We need help to shelve all the books and materials that come back each day at this busy library. We accept volunteers from middle and high schools. We are also glad to accept adult volunteers of all ages! Shelving books is a really good upper body workout--and there is no monthly gym membership fee! Plus we will need many volunteers to help us prepare for and put on the Hispanic Heritage Festival on Saturday, September 26th. See our website for the volunteer application form--or stop by the Front Desk and we will be glad to give you a copy!

Do you need a quiet place to study? Ask to reserve one of our two Study Rooms. These rooms can be used for individual study or for small groups to meet to work on projects. Study Rooms can be booked in advance and are available for two hour blocks. Room 109 includes a desktop computer. For Room 110, please ask about the Library laptop computer dedicated for use in this room. Please call us to reserve a Study Room today! Ph. 281-457-1631

If you have little ones, join us for Baby Time each Thursday morning at 10:30 am. This short interactive program introduces board books to children. Plus we sing songs, dance and play with the parachute! Toward the end of the brief program, we open the toy box for fun time with educational toys, including building blocks. And we end each program with bubbles!! The babies love to watch the bubbles, try to touch them and pop them! Bring your little one to join us!

Through the generosity of The Community Advisory Panel to Lyondell and Equistar, several new books are now part of the North Channel Library collection. These include: The Hogg Family and Houston: Philanthropy and the Civic Ideal by Kate Sayen Kirkland, Galveston: A City on Stilts by Jodi-Wright-Gidley and Jennifer Marines, In Ike's Wake: Southeast Texas Endures Hurricane's Devastation-a pictorial account by the Photojournalists of The Beaumont Enterprise and Galena Park: The Community that Shaped It's Own History by local authors Roger Leslie and Sue Elkins Edwards. These titles were selected to honor the memory of community leader, Mr. Kermit Reneau. We invite you to come to the Library to see these books. We also invite you to remember loved ones with memorial books. Please ask to speak to Branch Librarian, Carolyn Dial, about memorial books.

Do you have a favorite collection you would like to display? Our lobby display case is an option for you. Previously, we enjoyed "Mayberry USA" and "M & M Collectibles." Please contact Librarians Christina Thompson or Kelly Hall if you have a collection you can share with us for one month. Please phone us to discuss the details: 281-457-1631.

On Saturday September 26th, the North Channel Library will host the annual Hispanic Heritage Festival. Please mark this date on your calendar! Commissioner Sylvia Garcia will be on hand to kick off the celebration. Puppeteers will present a fun show in the Children's Area. Then we move outside for free food, crafts, music and more from 10 am until 2 pm. Businesses are invited to make donations. Please call for more information: 281-457-1631

Come to the North Channel Branch Library every second Saturday of the month to learn how to create beautiful scrapbooks! Our resident expert, Mia, shares her knowledge from 10 am to 3 pm. She also brings in numerous die-cuts to share. See you there!

Come to the North Channel Branch Library on Wednesday evenings at 6 pm, starting this September, to learn ways to cope in these money crunching times. A variety of seminars will be presented so that you can learn everything from how to start a small business to how to qualify for the $8,000 tax credit when you purchase a home before December 1st.
