September 19th is "Talk like a Pirate Day."

Ahoy, Me Hearties! Have you ever wanted to be a pirate?  If so, take note that September 19th is "Talk Like a Pirate Day!"  You will not want to miss this opportunity to express your inner Cap'n, buccaneer or privateer. To get you in the spirit I have complied a list of fun books to enjoy.

This Week in Twilight Tales: School Days

Many children started school this week with first-day jitters. So, during family storytime,  we read fun books about school days. One of my favorites, is The Three Silly Girls Grubb by John and Ann Hassett. The children adore this fractured fairytale, which is loosely based off of the classic Three Billy Goats Gruff.  Everyone was laughing themselves silly, and we had a wonderful time. Afterwards, children enjoyed making storyboards of the classic fairytale.

This Week in History: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Martin's big words : the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by  Doreen Rappaport

I love reading books about history, but that was not always the case.  As a child, most of my history lessons came from textbooks which I found utterly boring. It was not until my Mother took me to the local library that I realized "history" was not just about facts and dates.

Kids Celebrate National Aviation Week

As many of you know, we provide a special storytime for families. Twilight Tales is held every Monday night @ 7:00 p.m. and all ages are welcome. It has been my experience that children have a fascination with airplanes. So, this week we will be celebrating National Aviation Week.  Below are few ideas to extend your child's storytime experience.

Open the Door to Learning

The summer has almost ended, and many parents are thinking about purchasing school supplies. Don’t forget to stop by the library to get a free library card!  Everyone knows that the library is a great resource for books, but we also have several other support tools available to help your child succeed at school.   A few of my favorites are  TumbleBooks for kids, and

Summer Reading Program Ends Soon

I can’t believe it, but the Summer Reading Club will be ending in less than one week!  The 2009 Children's Summer Reading Program is designed for kids between the ages of 0 – 12 years old. Anytime a child reads a book, or is read to it counts towards their reading goals.

You can register and log information online at http://www.hcpl.net/kidsite/summerreader.htm or visit any Harris County Public Library, and the staff will be happy to assist you.

Free Kindermusik Program

I have been working with children for 23 years, and music is one of my greatest tools! I believe that every parent needs a magic bag as well. Music is the magic wand that calm’s a fussy baby, or makes that summer road trip a little shorter.  That is why, I would like to invite you and your child to join me for a special program.

Free Family Fun

Cows in the Library?

Ms Susan and I spend months planning for the Summer reading program. So, what happens when a presenter calls to inform us that they are not coming? Typically, we utilize alternative activities such as; storytimes, crafts and movies.

However, when the Mobile Dairy cow program was canceled, we knew we had a problem!  Many children had been talking about visiting the dairy cows for weeks, and we didn't want them to be disappointed. A puppet show was a perfect solution!
