Pop! Pop!

During the holiday season many families celebrate with food.  Have you ever considered the history of the food you eat,  or where it comes from?  Popcorn is one of my favorite foods.  The books below have fun fact about corn and popcorn.  For example, did you know that popcorn was discovered by the Indians? If you read, Corn is Maize: the gift of the Indians  you will learn how they cooked the popcorn. Hint: They didn't use a microwave or stove.

Visit with Fire Investigators Tom Petty and K-9 "Hunter"

Last week, Tom Petty and K-9 "Hunter"provided an informative program on fire safety for families.

During the program, children learned several key things that will keep them safe from danger.

  • Recognize a smoke detector and know what sound it makes.
  • If you hear an alarm or see/smell smoke (do not hide - go outside).
  • Officer Petty showed examples of lighters and matches.  He explained that these items  are tools for adults, not toys.
  •  Then Hunter demonstrated how to crawl on the ground to safety.

After the program children took time to meet our guests and have their photograph taken.    ...

Fire Prevention Program for Families this Tuesday!

Come Meet Fire Investigator Tom Petty and K-9 Hunter!

Fire investigators Tom Petty and K-9 "Hunter" will be visiting the Atascocita Branch Library this Tuesday (Nov. 10th) at 4:00 pm. Come learn how to make your home environment a safe place for everyone.

  • Tom Petty and dog Hunter will stay after the program for photo opportunities. So, don't forget your camera!

While you are at the library you can checkout fun filled books to read at home. No Dragons for Tea is one of my person favorites. This book's rhyming text and humorous story is one that children will not forget.

Where Have All The Bluebonnets Gone?

Each year, local schools encourage students to read the Bluebonnet Award Books, and Harris County Public Library system orders additional copies to meet the demands.  That being said, I often notice that our Bluebonnet display is completely empty. So what is a kid to do?
