Calling All Tween and Teen Writers and Artists!

Calling all tween and teen writers and artists! The Atascocita Branch Library is launching their first library teen zine this May and we need your talent! What are we looking for? Short stories, poems, articles, Top 10 Lists, reviews, photographs, drawings, manga, collages, cartoons, and anything else you can create. 

What’s a zine? A zine is a totally DIY publication that is distributed locally and traded all over the world.

The theme for this issue is “The Beginning and The End.”

Celebrate Teen Tech Week @ Atascocita Branch Library

Join us on March 13th and 14th for two fabulous Teen Tech Week Programs.

On Wednesday, March 13th at 4:30pm, explore the latest in technology with our Technology Petting Zoo. Play Kinect games, check out the latest apps for iPad and Kindle, and learn how to download books from the library. Check out a holographic keyboard and other cool gadgets.

On Thursday, March 14th at 4:30pm, rejoice in the joy of Pi on Pi Day. Get a slice of Pi cake, Pi cookies, and pizza Pi. The person who can recite the most digits in Pi from memory gets a prize!

FOAL Book Sale This Weekend

Join the Friends of the Atascocita Library this weekend for their first book sale of the year! Preview night is Friday, February 8th from 5-7pm for members only. Not a member? Join at the door.

The sale will be open to the public on Saturday, February 9th from 10am to 5pm but don't wait too late or you'll miss out on all the great bargains.

All the money raised by the sale funds programs for all ages.

Teens: Celebrate Chocolate Covered Anything Day @ the Library

Celebrate Chocolate Covered Anything Day  a bit early. On Thursday, December 6th at 4:30pm, enhance fruit, pretzels, and candy by dipping it in chocolate.

Looking for something new to read? Join us for an afternoon of "book speed dating" and book swapping. Also enjoy book related snacks and games. For the book swap, bring any gently read books that you would like to trade. You will be issued a ticket for each book that you can redeem for another book.
 

Magic for Teens

Thursday, July 19th, 3pm

Want to amaze your friends and family? Want to impress that special someone? Want to add magic to your performing resume? Learn fantastic magic tricks with professional magician Julian Franklin. Space is limited so registration is required.

Teens: Get Your Dance On & Get Creative @ the Library

Are you the King or Queen of DDR? Get your dance on this week with Dance Dance Revolution Dance Off on Wednesday, June 20th at 3pm. 

On Thursday, learn how to unleash your creativity with a variety of inspiring games at our Creativity Jam at 3pm. 

Both programs are designed for middle school and high school students.

Love Books? Why Not Write One?: National Novel Writing Month Countdown

 

Calling all teen writers! Want a way to smash writer's block and get your words out? Try writing your novel in a month! I know it sounds impossible, but people have been doing it every year in November since 1999 thanks to National Novel Writing Month (aka NaNoWriMo) . Every year, teens all over the country spend the month of November simply writing. No editing allowed. Just writing. The website also has writing challenges, a message board,  and pep talks. The clock is ticking! Ready, Set, Write!

Picture It!: Teen Read Week Events

From art to zines, you can celebrate Teen Read Week next week at the Atascocita Branch Library! On Monday, October 17th at 4:30pm get graphic with our Graphic Novel Book Club. Bring your favorite manga, superhero or graphic novels to the meeting so you can share them with the group.

Want to create your own publication and trade it with people all over the world? Learn about the wonderful world of zines at Zine Scene on Wednesday, October 19th at 4:30pm. Help contribute to our very first library zine.

Teens: Hooray for Hollywood Party

Walk the red carpet, dodge the paparazzi, and claim your swag bag at the Hooray for Hollywood party on Friday, July 8th from 6-8pm. How do you get a ticket to this party? Read! Sign up for the Teen Summer Reading Club here, log 5 books or 10 hours, and claim your prizes at the Atascocita Branch Library. Permission forms are due on Thursday, July 7th so don't miss out!

Can't make the party? Our next after hours party will be the annual Video Game Jam on Saturday, August 6th from 5-7pm. Just read a total of 15 books or 30 hours for your pass to video game madness.
