It's almost time, folks! The Academy Awards presentation will be this Sunday, February 27, on ABC. Hosted by Anne Hathaway, a past nominee, and James Franco, a current nominee, it should be a fun show. The competition is particularly strong this year and some categories are unpredictable.

In my last two blogs I covered the Best Picture, then Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor. It's time to introduce the ladies.

The Oscars: May the Best Picture Win

For us movie fans, this past Tuesday was a big day. The nominations for the 83rd Academy Awards were announced. There are many awards presented every year: the Golden Globes, the Screen Actors Guild, the Directors Guild, Producers Guild, and Writers Guild. Critics choose their favorites, too.  There are even “awards” for the worst movies of the year, the Razzies, which sometimes overlap the other awards. But nothing matches the Oscars for recognition and excitement.

It Don't Come Easy

Got to pay your dues if you wanna sing the blues, and you know it don’t come easy.

For some reason, Ringo Starr’s song got stuck in my head the other day. It made me think about musicians and singers who have entertained us over the years. Hollywood has had a love affair with music ever since Al Jolson said, “You ain’t heard nothin’ yet!” Although musicals are not the movie staple they once were, we still have movies about singers, giving the studios a chance to make non-traditional musicals.
