Hispanic Heritage Craft and Hot Chocolate Tasting

Young people 9 to 17 are invited to join us for a tissue flower craft tomorrow, Tuesday, September 29, at 5 PM, during our "merienda" celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month. In addition to the craft, we are inviting all ages to sample several varieties of hot chocolate, along with some sweet bread. This Spanish custom of enjoying a treat during the afternoon (especially chocolate!) sounds wonderful to me.  We will also have some live guitar music to fully set the mood and transport us mentally to Spain.

La Merienda -- Ah, the joys of chocolate!

I love chocolate and consider it essential to life. Needless to say, I think it is wonderful that the people of Spain devote time each afternoon to "la merienda," which is a light meal or snack, such as their very special hot chocolate along with sweet bread. To celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, we are having our very own merienda here at Baldwin Boettcher, at 5 PM on Tuesday, September 29. We will have several varieties of hot chocolate which may be new to you – so why not take time for a chocolate break and experience some new flavors along with us? This is a program for all family members.

Hispanic Heritage Events

Hispanic Heritage Month runs September 15 – October 15, and we have several programs planned here at Baldwin Boettcher.

Hurricane Season Not Over Quite Yet…

In fact, we are only just now coming to the most likely period for hurricanes. Harris County Office of Emergency Management will be on hand to help us all prepare for the unhappy possibility of a major storm visiting the Gulf Coast this year. This informative program will be in the meeting room here at Baldwin Boettcher on Tuesday, September 8, at 5:00 PM, and will include a question and answer period. All are invited to attend.

Classic Movie Matinee on September 2

Sometimes you just love to see a movie over and over again. New movies are great, of course, but there are times you just want the comfort and predictable outcome of a movie you are sure you love. We'll be showing one of these gems for our next Classic Movie Club selection, and we invite you to join us on Wednesday, September 2, at 2:00 PM, in the Baldwin Boettcher meeting room. This 1959 romantic comedy will put a smile in your heart, whether it’s the first or the tenth time you have seen it. For more information, call us at 281-821-1320.

Book Club Begins Reading for September Meeting

Appointment in Samarra    I’m currently on page 40 of John O’Hara’s Appointment in Samarra and finding it hard to put down. This classic novel published in 1934 lets us into the world of the country club set, in a small town in Pennsylvania during the first part of the Great Depression. I am reminded a bit of F. Scott Fitzgerald in the setting and characters, yet Mr. O’Hara is a very different (and also excellent!) writer.

Wednesday Movies Coming Soon!

Our new Classic Cinema Club is moving to Wednesday afternoons, beginning Wednesday, September 2. Please come at 2:00 PM on that day to watch a hilarious romantic comedy from 1959 on our big screen in the library meeting room. We will even move in some big armchairs to give you that movie theatre feel. This program will be of interest to adults and seniors, but of course all family members are welcome to attend. The Classic Cinema Club will meet monthly.

Still time to log those books

Remember, Summer Reading Program will continue through this Saturday, August 8.  It's not too late to add books to your logs. And if you haven't even registered yet?  Well, there's still time to join in and add all the books you've read this summer.  We have a great "end of summer" party planned for Saturday the 8th at 2:00 PM.  Just show up by 1:30 PM to get your free ticket to hear Non-Toxic Band!  We hope to see you there!
