Appaloosa: the Hollywood version

It's the interplay between Viggo Mortensen (Everitt Hitch) and Ed Harris (Virgil Cole) that makes the movie version or Robert Parker's novel work at all. And Jeremy Irons makes a pretty good bad guy.

UNVEILING CEREMONY IN SEABROOK ON TUESDAY!

EV Line Drawing English & Assocs.

The plans for the new Evelyn Meador Branch Library, created by English & Associates of Houston will be unveiled this coming Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. in Seabrook on the site of the old facility. A reception, hosted by the Friends of Evelyn Meador, will follow at the Seabrook Community House at 1210 Anders. Included in the line up of guest speakers is Lynn Meador Edmundson, daughter of Evelyn Meador, who donated the land for the original building which first opened in June of 1988.

Holmes On The Range?

The Holmes referred to in the title is, of course, the master himself, Mr. Sherlock Holmes.  While he does not actually appear in the story, he is central to the plot. Two cowboys, using the methods of the beloved detective, solve a rather convoluted mystery on a Montana ranch in 1893. This story has a lot to offer: murder (of course), and mayhem, shootouts, great characters, even good horses, all turned out with nice dashes of humor and some pathos.  The pacing builds a bit slowly, but the people you meet make the wait worthwhile. The reading by William Dufris is masterful; he even handles the women's voices well.  I love the way Mr. Holmes (or at least his legacy) keeps turning up in the most unexpected places!

Beyond Westernology 101

Westerns used to be all about cowboys and Indians, horses and cattle, blazing guns and action. While those elements are certainly tried and true and still worth paying attention to, these days, the western can take some very interesting turns. (Personally, I like all of the above with generous chunks of open skies, mountains, prairies & canyons thrown in!) But if you are looking for something a little beyond the traditional western, check out our Weirdly Western link. There you’ll find gothic westerns, westerns with horror or science fiction elements thrown in, and other stories that tend to play fast and loose with our much loved myths of the west.  Follow the link above, or click on the Books tab from our homepage and scroll down to Westerns, then look for the link on the left side on the page. Happy Hunting!

Where Will the New Evelyn Meador Branch Be Located?

Ever since the plans for a new Evelyn Meador Branch in Seabrook were announced, people have been asking me if the new building will be in the same location. Good question. The new building will actually be directly across the parking lot from the old building. That is the highest point of ground on the property, and the site will be raised another two feet before construction begins. The current scenario is that the old building will be torn down before work on the new one begins. This will give the contractors much more room to work. The site of the old building will be used as part of the new parking lot. In my next post, I'll highlight some of the great features planned for the new building.
