It's a Bird! It's a Plane! No it's...MY LIBRARIAN!?

Have you ever wanted to skydive? This Thursday, Northwest Branch Librarian Deborah Sica and circulation assistant Connie Villa will do just that! Now you might be asking yourself “who would want to jump out of a perfectly good plane?” Well, if you’ve ever seen Deborah arrive for work on her motorcycle then you already know she’s not exactly your grandmother’s librarian. As for Connie, she has worked previously as an airline attendant for 12 years, so this probably isn’t her first inclination to want to jump. Both women are incredibly fearless, and for this we applaud them (and wish them lots of luck). Check back soon for actual photos.

Register to Vote at Northwest Library Today!

Are you registered to vote? Chances are if you come to the Northwest circulation desk we will ask you this question. With the Upcoming 2010 midterm elections this November, it’s important to make sure that you get your registration in by October 4 in order to participate. Luckily, Northwest library is registering voters every day! It’s fast, free, and easy. The next time you come into our branch, just fill out a voter registration application, leave it with one of our friendly staff members, and consider it postmarked.

Recent Rearrangements at Northwest Library

Confused Library Patron

Just when you thought you knew exactly where to find everything in the Northwest Library, we pulled the old switcheroo. Even if it doesn’t seem to be the case, we assure you that the recent rearrangements are all in the interest of making your favorite books easier to find. All paperbacks are now interfiled with the rest of the adult fiction collection. Our foreign language collections (Spanish, Hindi, and Vietnamese) have now moved to the former reference aisle, and the reference collection has moved to the back wall where paperback genres used to be. Still confused? Just ask a friendly staff member and we’ll point you in the right direction…at least until the next big change.

Free Screening of Rushmore at Discovery Green Downtown

Rushmore

On Friday September 24, at Discovery Green Park downtown, there will be a free outdoor screening of Rushmore (R, 1998). Rushmore was filmed right here in Houston by native son Wes Anderson. Harris County Public Library carries Mr. Anderson’s entire catalog of films which also includes Bottle Rocket (R, 1996), The Royal Tenenbaums (R, 2001), The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (R, 2004), The Darjeeling Limited (R, 2007), and The Fantastic Mr. Fox (PG, 2009). In fact, we here at Northwest love Wes Anderson so much that we’ve chosen The Mr. Fox as our free Monday evening film more than once.

Teen Movie Night

School pressures, job pressures, friend pressures? Sometimes you just need to forget about the immediate chaos, sit back and lose yourself in a great film. Each Monday at 4:00 PM at Northwest we screen a variety of new release and classic movies ranging anywhere from documentaries to the latest installment of your favorite vampire saga. You'll feel like you've gone to the movies while viewing films projected at an enormous scale in our dark, quiet meeting room. Feel free to bring a bag of popcorn (microwave available) or your favorite snack. Most films on Monday nights are rated PG-13, so some content may not be suitable for younger viewers.
