Retirement Education Winter 2012 Series

Join us  on Wednesday nights this winter for a 5 week series on retirement education presented by MWA Advisors, Inc. in partnership with the NAPFA Consumer Education Foundation.  The series begins Wednesday, January 11th and ends Wednesday, February 15th, and all sessions begin at 6:30 p.m.  Registration is encouraged, but not required and can be done over the phone (281-488-1906), in person at the reference desk or online.  All sessions will be held in the Marge Jacobson Community Room aside from the last meeting, which will be held in the Children's Activity Space. 

Sabine Stromeyer @ Freeman Library

In cooperation with The Arts of Alliance of Clear Lake, Freeman Library is proud to announce that several works by local artist Sabine Stromeyer are on display in our Internet Cafe and the Marge Jacobson Community Room for the next three months, so come down and check them out while you can.  The text below is taken from the artist's statement provided for the display:

Freeman's Branch Winner for Reader Nation 2011

Winner Cindy Dickerson is  very pleased to be the Freeman Branch winner.  She grew up in libraries,  particularly  the Evelyn Meador Branch in Seabrook.  She is an English teacher and a school counselor, and wants her new baby Audrey to  love the library and books.  She found out about Reader Nation as she was signing up for Book Hunters, our book advising service.  She enjoyed keeping track of the books that she read this summer, and especially enjoyed reading The Help and Water for Elephants.  She brings baby Audrey to the library’s Book Babies program, and says she loves the library because there is something for everyone from Seniors  to Infants.   Cindy is impressed by the computer class offerings that the library provides.  She p

Reader Nation 2011 1st Place Grand Prize Winner

College student Teresa Yeh is the 1st place grand prize winner for Harris County Public Library’s Adult Summer Reading Program 2011.  As the grand prize winner, Teresa took home $200 in gift cards for Amazon.com, which she plans to spend on textbooks.  Teresa has participated in the summer reading program since she was a kid, so she just automatically entered this year without giving much thought to potential prizes, but she did remember to log her books.  Teresa said that she really likes using the library’s digital media catalog, and most of the books she read over the summer were eBooks.

The August series of job search seminars from Workforce Solutions begin this Thursday, August 4th at 2:00 p.m. in the 1st Floor Community Room.  Remaining seminars for the month of August will be as follows:

New Exhibit at Freeman

Check out the new artwork on our walls!  Freeman Library’s partnership with the Arts Alliance at Clear Lake gives us a chance to see the work of a variety of local artists, and over the next few months we’ll have the opportunity to enjoy the work of Fred Cerkan, Peter Janecke and Marlene Llanes in the Marge Jacobson Community Room and in the Internet Café. 

Fred Cerkan’s series, Adobe Forms and Textures “explores the various forms and textures found in the adobe walls that are prevalent in the architecture of the Southwest”.  His exhibit focuses on San Francisco de Asis, the mission church in Taos, New Mexico.

Workforce Solutions-Evening Class

This week is your chance to attend a Workforce Solutions job search seminar in the evening.  Thursday, July 28th from 6:30-8:30 in the 1st Floor Community Room, there will be a seminar that covers resumes, cover letters, networking and interviewing.  If you missed any of the morning sessions this month, here's your chance to catch up.

Need to brush up your job searching skills?  During the months of June & July Workforce Solutions will be presenting a series of job search seminars in the 1st Floor Community Room.  Topics covered will range from creating a resume to interviewing and networking skills. 

Adult Summer Reading Program

Hey adults, this year's Summer Reading Program (SRP) kicked off on Friday, and our first random drawing for a prize pack provided by the Friends of Freeman Library will be this Friday, June 10th.  To be eligible for this drawing you only have to register for SRP and then keep your fingers crossed that your name is drawn.  Register online or at the library.
