Free SAT Practice Test

SAT guideFor students entering college, nothing is more important that SAT or ACT scores! What could be better than taking a practice test for FREE? The Princeton Review is offering a free SAT practice test on Saturday, October 9, from 12:30 – 4:30 pm at the Fairbanks Library. They will come back one week later, on Saturday, October 16, from 12:30 – 2:00 pm to give students their scores and a detailed analysis of what looks good and what the students can do to improve their scores. Call the library at (713) 466-4438 to register to take advantage of this priceless opportunity. Can't make it to the session? Check out one of our SAT study guides!

Volunteers Needed

ShelverThe Fairbanks Library had lot of volunteers over the summer. They did a great job, and those with the most volunteer hours received movie tickets from the Friends of the Library. Then school started and they all disappeared. We need volunteers now more than ever. If you can find time in your schedule, please come and help us get these books, movies, etc. back on the shelves where they belong.

We Have a Winner!

SRP winnerFor the past few years, the Harris County Friends of the Library have sponsored gift cards for adults that participate in the adult Summer Reading Program and are winners of a random drawing. This year, the winner of the $50 Amazon.com gift card for the Fairbanks Branch is Kim Smith. Ms. Smith had already decided that this year, she would do something that she should be doing. A young man she works with inspired her to start reading and to use the library. When she saw signs in the library and information on the library’s web site about the adult Summer Reading Program, it seemed perfect. She mostly read or listened to books by T.D. Jakes over the summer. She particularly enjoyed listening to the audio books.

But the Music Lives On

Music CDThis Sunday, August 29, would have been Michael Jackson’s birthday. The occasion can serve as a reminder that the music of Michael Jackson and others lives on in the music collections of libraries. Harris County Public Library has over 9800 album titles. You can find all of them by typing “sound recording music” in the catalog search box on our home page. You can find the music you are interested in by adding the genre, the artist, or a title to the search terms. You can also download music from our Digital Media Catalog! [Clipart ©JupiterImages.]

Kids in School = "Me Time" for Parents

School busNow that the kids are back in school, maybe you can get some reading done. You may want to take a look at the “Books” page on our web site for blog posts and links to bestseller lists, book reviews, genre lists, award lists, author interviews, newsletters, book club sites, other book-related sites, and staff favorites. And remember our fabulous NoveList Plus database, which I wrote about last January.
