Help has arrived! Trained volunteers from AARP are now coming to the library to help people complete their 2012 federal income tax forms. There are no age or income requirements, they can file returns electronically, and it’s FREE. The volunteers are in the library meeting room on Saturdays, from 10 am to 2 pm, and on Mondays and Thursdays, from 1 to 5 pm. They operate on a first-come, first-served basis, with no appointments. In the last session of the Texas State Legislature, funding for the Texas State Library and Archives Commission was cut by 64%, and 80% of that 64% was money that the Texas State Library used to pass on to public libraries, school libraries, and college libraries all over the state. In addition, because the legislature cut state funding so dramatically, Texas lost matching federal funds. The state legislature reconvenes today.
