October is National Reading Group Month

Book clubA book club can be a great thing.  If you don’t believe it, there are some outstanding books you can read about book clubs, like Angry Housewives Eating Bon-bons and The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society.  A book club gives you a chance to spend time with people that are a lot like you, or people that are interesting to talk to because they’re different from you.  We have a group that was organized through the Fairbanks Library but meets at a r

Summer Winner

FBAdultSRP2012Virginia has been a Fairbanks Library customer for several years now, and I’m sure it has paid off in many ways.  This summer, though, it paid off in dollars.  Just for participating in our adult Summer Reading Program and reading at least 5 books between June 4 and August 11, Virginia won a $30 Amazon.com gift card.  Virginia, we hope you get something that you will enjoy a lot.  The rest of you might want to keep this opportunity in mind when next June rolls around.  Reading is fun anyway, and the chance to win a prize just makes it more fun.

Be a Volunteer ESL Tutor

TutorThere are a lot of people in the Fairbanks area who want to learn to read, write, and speak the English language.  If you have a little spare time, you can help them.  You don’t have to be able to speak a foreign language, and we will provide teaching materials for you.  If you are interested, please come to a training session for volunteer ESL tutors here at the Fairbanks Library on Friday, September 7, from 1:00-4:00 pm.  After the training session, we will try to match tutors with students who can meet on the same schedule.  To register, please call the library at (713) 466-4438.

Free Information from Optometrist

OptometristTherapeutic Optometrist Dr. Moes Nasser is offering a free educational discussion for teens, tweens, and their parents about eye health and eye care, just in time to ensure success as children go back to school.  One out of every four children ages 5-17 have a vision problem, so it's important for parents to know about eye health.  Dr. Nasser will be discussing everything from signs and symptoms of eye injury to making the transition from glasses to contact lenses to how to ensure proper eye care.   Free goodie bags with eye care tips and helpful information will be provided.
