West University Library-Book Club Selection for March 3

White TeethTitle to be discussed : White Teeth, by Zadie Smith.  Date of meeting: Wednesday March 3, 11:00 am, at 6104 Auden.  Summary: "Epic in scale and intimate in approach, White Teeth is a formidably ambitious debut. First novelist Zadie Smith takes on race, sex, class, history, and the minefield of gender politics, and such is her wit and inventiveness that these weighty subjects seem effortlessly light.

Celebrate Black History Month with a movie

In honor of Black History Month, we will be showing an independent movie from the 1960's, about the struggles of Black life in America.  The movie was shot at the height of the Civil Rights movement.  Ivan Dixon (later of Hogan's Heroes) plays a railroad worker who settles down to marry a preacher's daughter (jazz singer Abbey Lincoln), only to find that the system is rigged against him.

We will show the movie on Thursday, February 25th at 11 a.m.  Refreshments will be served!

Tax forms at the Library

Come pick up your tax forms from the library.  You can also visit the government website at www.irs.gov, and print out the forms you need to complete your tax return.  If you can't find the forms you are looking for, please don't hesitate to ask us for assistance!

West University Storytime

storytimeCome join our Preschool Story Time every Tuesday at 10:30am!  It is recommended for children ages 2-6, and  features stories, songs, and motion.  This Tuesday the theme will be about dogs!

Toys for Tots

We are pleased to announce that West University Library is a drop-off location for Toys for Tots this holiday season.  Please donate new, unwrapped toys, so that they may be destributed as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community.  Happy Holidays!

Title to be discussed:The Remains of the Day, by Kazuo Ishiguro.  Date of meeting: Wednesday January 6, 11:00 am, at 6104 Auden.  Summary: "The novel's narrator, Stevens, is a perfect English butler who tries to give his narrow existence form and meaning through the self-effacing, almost mystical practice of his profession.

Meet the ballerinas of the Nutcracker

Come listen to the timeless story of the Nutcracker, on December 2 at 3:15pm, read by a ballerina from the Houston Ballet. Meet several other dancers in costume. Refreshments served. For children ages 4 years and up.
