Book Club Selection for October 7

We held our first book club meeting on September 2nd, and had a wonderful discussion of the book "On Agate Hill," by Lee Smith.  We will meet again on October 7th, and we have chosen to read "The Group," by Mary McCarthy.  Please join us at 11:00 am, at Senior Services if you would like to participate!

Lap Sit Starts Again at WU

We're excited to be resuming the Lap Sit story time sessions on Wednesday mornings at 10:30am, starting September 2.

The series-for babies aged 3 months to 24 months-will run from September through the end of May.  We bounce, clap, sing, and chant nursery rhymes.  This is a great step towards instilling a love of language and preparing babies to speak and read.  The sessions last about 20-25 minutes, with play time afterward.  A wonderful opportunity for parents and caregivers to meet, visit and possibly set up play dates.

Summer Reading Program Winner at WU!

SRP Winner at WUPatricia Bemrose is the winner of a $50 gift card from!  She successfully completed ReaderNation, the Adult Summer Reading Program of HCPL, and her name was chosen from all the participants at West University.  Ms. Bemrose describes herself as an avid reader, and enjoys listening to books on CD as well.  This summer she particularly enjoyed the book, "Dewey: the Small-Town Library Cat who Touched the World," by Vicki Myron.  Ms. Bemrose plans to spend her gift card on more books, and will most likely participate in the reading program next summer.

Miller Outdoor Theatre

The new Miller Outdoor Theatre calendars have arrived at the West University Branch.  Please pick up one of the calendars and take advantage of the free performances in Hermann Park.  I attended a performance of Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night," on August 6th, and had a wonderful time.  Bring a picnic basket and dine under the stars.  There are also three nights of movie musicals coming up in August, as well as movie nights and a light show.  Hermann Park is located less than 5 miles from West University and is also home to the Houston Zoo, a train ride, a golf course, and the Museum of Natural Science.

Book Club to start again in September

Our monthly book discussion group will resume on September 2nd.  We will be discussing "on Agate Hill," by Lee Smith.  I look forward to meeting returning members of the group, and I welcome new members.  Please contact West University Library if you would like to reserve a copy of the book.

End of Summer Reading Program!

This has been my first summer at West University, and even though I arrived in late June, I have managed to catch some of the exciting programs offered.  We have had many animals visit us, including ferrets, owls, sharks and rays, spiders and snakes.  We have also been entertained by a magician, weather science, square dancing, and more!

WU 2009 SRP programs 002 by hcplebranch.

298 children completed the summer reading program, and we had a total attendance of 999 children and 570 adults at our weekly programs.  We are proud of the fact that 154 adults participated in the adult summer reading program, up from 19 last year.

We hope to see you all again next year!

Ferrets at WU!

We are very excited about our upcoming ferret program!  On Tuesday July 28, at 3pm, children will have the opportunity to meet and interact with a few of these remarkable animals.  Libby, our Assistant Branch Librarian, will be bringing Ace, Roux, Maddie, Blizzard and Rasco.  They have made previous appearances at West University, and they are thrilled to be making a return visit.
