Shadow Play

School is almost out. What are kids to do? Thankfully, the Harris County Public Library's excellent Summer Reading Program is on the horizon. In addition, author Susan Williamson makes it easy for kids to fill their days with fun activities in her book Summer fun: 60 activities for a kid-perfect summer. There are things to do on rainy days, sunny days, and on summer nights.

One of the activities for rainy days in Williamson's book is to make a movable shadow puppet. With a pencil, some poster board, a hole punch, and other materials, kids can make a puppet and put on a fun puppet show.

Where is Tibet?

book cover "Where is Tibet?"

Where is Tibet? Tibet is a plateua in Asia located north of the Himalayan mountains. India, China, and Nepal are her neighbors. Tibet was invaded by China in the 1950s. Many Tibetans fled their country to India and Nepal. Children of these refugees are growing up in exile wondering where their homeland is.

Tibet

May is Asian Pacific Heritage Month! The Aldine Library is celebrating by showing a special movie about Tibet. Come join us on Tuesday, May 10th at 4 PM in the Meeting Room to view this film. Blending hypnotic music and breathtakingly beautiful imagery, the movie provides a glimpse of the land called "the Roof of the World."

Refreshments will be provided. See you there!

Patched Up

The Aldine Library's nice mural has been repaired! The Musuem of Cultural Arts, Houston, came out to the library and patched up our mosaic. The shifting of the building's foundation may have been a factor in the creation of cracks in the mural.

The repair work was all made possible by the generous funding of the Friends of the Aldine Library. Please consider making a donation to show your support and appreciation for the Aldine Library!
