Counting Time

Last week was Patron Count Week among the branches of the Harris County Library system. The Aldine Library had volunteers placed at the entrance of the building to count each man, woman, and child who entered. In total, the Aldine Library had 4147 visitors last week!

Attention Aldine adults! In addition to children's and teen's reading clubs, Harris County Public Library also has an Adult Summer Reading Program. The program works like this: read or listen to 4 books and log the titles online for a chance to win prizes. The Aldine Library will select a winner from a random drawing of readers completing the program. The prize will be a $50.00 bookstore gift card.

In addition to the branch prize, there will be system wide drawings. Three entries will be selected from a random drawing of all readers who complete the program. The prizes will be bookstore gift cards in the amounts of $200.00 (for 1st prize), $150.00 (for 2nd prize), and $100.00 (for 3rd prize).

Summer does not officially begin until June 21st, 2010. However, it is already plenty warm outside.

It is important to drink plenty of water during the hot summer months.

Here at the Aldine library, we have two water fountains next to our book display case. You may not have known it, but underneath these fountains, a water filter is attached. Stop by today and enjoy a sip of cool, refreshing, filtered water. It's good stuff.

Exciting Writing

On Saturday, May 29th, 2010, kids and adults enjoyed an introductory lesson on Chinese writing taught by Ms. Huai-jing Mu. The class was held at the Aldine Library in celebration of Asian Pacific Heritage Month. Ms. Mu gave a brief overview of the history of the Chinese language and demonstrated how to write common words in Chinese. Also, she translated names into Chinese for those in attendance. Each participant was given a small, colorful bag with Chinese coins as a souvenir.

The Thrill of the Grill

With Memorial Day just around the corner- and with summer on its way- it's time for a cookout! But what if you don't know how to fire up the grill? No worries. Grill It! by Chris Schlesinger and John Willoughby can help. This helpful book covers grilling inside and out. It includes advice on how to choose your fuel and your tools; building and starting the fire; and deciding when your food is done.

Here's a helpful tip on when to use the lid on a grill found in the book: "you should cover the grill only when you are doing long, indirect cooking, never when you are cooking directly over the coals."
