Let It Snow, Let It Snow...

With weather reports that Houston might get snow and the temperatures dropping, I’ve been in the mood to curl up with a good book and a cup of hot cocoa. The list below includes books that take place in winter, in cold places, or just remind me of the cold. Brrr!

I'm Thankful For...

Books that make me laugh out loud!

Thanksgiving & TV Show Marathons

thanksgiving cranberriesI don’t get network or cable television at home and watch most of my favorite television shows online or on DVD, but whenever we visit family for the holidays it is always a perfect opportunity to catch up with shows I never otherwise get to watch (well, in addition to catching up with family, obviously).  While Dad and my uncle watch football, I’ll be huddled around another TV basking in the glow of holiday marathons, watching hours of consecutive episodes.

I'm Thankful For...

The films of Spike Lee. Ever since I saw 4 Little Girls, which chronicles the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama in 1963, the young lives lost in the tragedy, and the impact the attack had on the community and the nation, I’ve been a fan of Spike Lee. Controversial, hard-hitting, and thought-provoking, I count some of his movies as among my favorites.

Something Creepy?

With Halloween around the corner and with the weather getting a little cooler, I’ve been in the mood for some creepy, suspenseful, or frightening stories – you know, something I can read with a flashlight while huddled under the covers.

Guilty Pleasures

tea cup and saucerAs my partner works at the Texas Renaissance Festival every year, my weekends in October and November are spent alone with the dogs, who don’t typically pass judgment over what I choose to watch for fun. This past weekend I finished knitting a scarf, drank endless cups of tea, and watched Murder, She Wrote. There’s something reassuring about Jessica Fletcher – she seems to know everything (from making a good lobster to poisons), she always solves the case, and she ends each show throwing her head back in laughter – that gal knows how to have a good time.

What are your guilty pleasures?
