Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month!

day of the dead pictureEach year in the United States between September 15 and October 15 we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month by paying tribute to people of Hispanic heritage from the past and present who have impacted our nation and who have enriched our American culture. Living in the Houston area, we enjoy a wonderful diversity of cultural influences and there are many different opportunities open for us to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. How will you celebrate?

Packing My Bags for a Deserted Island

desert islandWhat would you hope to have with you if you were stranded on a deserted island? Okay, excluding all the tools and other useful-for-survival sorts of things. If you’re stranded somewhere that doesn’t have electricity, what exactly do you do for entertainment while you’re waiting for rescue? You could dance, sing, draw using a stick, run around in circles, risk the waters and swim. Or, if you’re lucky enough to have a bag full of books, you could be occupied for hours and hours. What books would you want to have on a deserted island (you know, just for entertainment purposes…no “guidebook to edible plants”-type books allowed)?

Are You Ready for Some Football?

football in grassFootball season has arrived, especially with the first NFL games kicking off this weekend (yes, I did have to look this up to confirm). Fall is one of my favorite seasons: the weather gets cooler; the days are shorter; and curling up under the covers with a good book doesn’t require having the air conditioning on full blast to make the pastime bearable. The beginning of the football season just seems to go hand-in-hand with the changing leaves (okay, in other parts of the country) and nothing can quite rival the experience of sitting on uncomfortable metal bleachers feeling like your face is going to freeze off to the sound of a marching band’s drums and the cheer of the crowds. Who are you rooting for this season?

Labor Day & After-School Jobs

work stationWith the new school year in full swing, many of us have bid farewell to our summer jobs, but others of us have changed our hours so we can go to school during the day and still make some spending money in after-school jobs. There are some great teen books that feature working in some capacity. So whether you have to work this Labor Day weekend or have the weekend free to curl up with a good book, you might grab one of these.
