Teaching: The Gift That Keeps on Giving

Are you looking for a way to give back to your community? Consider becoming a English as a Second Language tutor. Harris County Public Library offers an English as a Second Language program for adults in the Katy community and we are looking for tutors. Tutor just one student or teach an entire class. Don't worry if you don't speak a foreign language, we want your students to be speaking English anyway! If you are interested in this valuable volunteer experience, we encourage you to join us for a tutor training session tomorrw, March 6 from 9 AM to 3 PM. We will provide for you all training materials and a free lunch. All we ask in return is that you actively support the ESL program here at Maud Marks for at least 9 months. At the Maud Marks Library, we know how to party right.  This was evidenced on Monday night at our annual ESL party.  ESL students and their tutors gathered for a night of food and fun.  Everyone brought a dish from their native country.  One of the students showed of her paintings she did on rice paper.  One of the tutors spoke about how much fun her class has had over the years.  Still another student taught the group how to make an origami crane.

Celebrate African American History and Culture at the Maud Marks Library

How are you planning on celebrating Black History Month?  At the library, we're planning on doing it with some fun!  Next Saturday, February 20, come by the library about 2 PM for some cool jazz tunes.  Jazz Education Inc. will be here to celebrate contributions of the African-American culture.  Come listen to music first played by jazz greats Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong.  Hear the inspirational poetry about other African-Americans.  Have fun this February as we celebrate the African-American culture through music and poetry.

One of the Most Important Tests You Will Ever Take!

CALLING ALL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS!!!!!! Are you looking to improve that SAT score for better college entrance?  Did you know we could help?  Join us this Saturday, February 6 at 10:15 am, as the Princeton Review will be here to give students a practice SAT. But that's not all!  Next Saturday, they will return at 12 PM with graded tests and tips and strategies for scoring high on the SAT. All college bound students are invited to learn what you need to do to improve your score on one of the most important tests you’ll ever take.
