OK, so we don't have the space shuttle anymore.  We don't know when we're going back to the moon.  What's next for NASA and Space City Houston?  Well, a lot apparently.

Join us at the Maud Marks Library on Saturday, October 15 at 1 PM as we explore what is beyond the final frontier in space!  Robert Jon Scheid, will here to discuss what is coming in the future for NASA and the Johnson Space Center.  We don't want to miss this all important discussion about the future of our great city.

Library Fiesta Time!

OLE!  It's time to party at the Maud Marks Library!  We will be hosting our annual Hispanic Heritage Fiesta this Saturday, September 17 in the afternoon.  We will have dancing, food, music, a cooking demonstration, and children's crafts all afternoon until 4 PM.

The schedule for the afternoon is as follows:

12:30 PM- A guitarist will be here to play us some Latin Tunes

1:00 PM- HEB will be here to cook enchiladas

1:30 PM-  The Chilean Folklife group will be back to dance their country's folk dances.

2:30 PM- Omni Salsa will be here to give Salsa lessons.

All afternoon- The children's area will be turned into Clara's Craft Corner as we make paper flowers, tin ornaments, and pinatas.  Of course, the International Cafe opens as usual for those with the munchies.

Teachers Needed!

At the Maud Marks Library, we are so grateful for all our volunteers.  We have them shelve books, do data entry, scan books, and more.

Right now, the Maud Marks Library needs ESL tutors.  We need people willing to teach adults English on a volunteer basis once a week for at least 9 months.  You don't need to be able to speak another language to teach ESL, in fact, we would prefer if you didn't!  All you need is a willingness to help new immigrants become acclimated with the American way of life.

We will be hosting a tutor training session on Saturday, September 3 at 9 AM.  There is no charge for the session or the training materials.  We'll even feed you lunch!

Please consider joining our very active and important ESL community.

Computer Classes @ Your Library

There is just so much going on at the Maud Marks Library right now.  Did you know that we can teach you how to search the Internet for information?  Just sign up for our Basic Internet class on Saturday August 20 at 10 AM.  More interested in finding those illusive ancestors?  We have a Genealogy Online class coming up on Tuesday, August 23 @ 1 PM.

If computer classes aren't your thing, we are still in the midst of our latest Job Search Seminar from 10 AM to noon.  On Monday, August 22 we will be discussing networking and Monday, August 29 we will be practicing interviewing skills.

So Mysterious!

Did you know that the Maud Marks Library has added a NEW book club for the summer.  Our mystery book club will be meeting on Monday, July 18 at 2 PM.  We will be discussing Grave Goods the third in the Mistress in the Art of Death series by Ariana Franklin.  Everyone is invited to join us for a discussion of this facinating and fun book.  There are extra copies behind the customer service desk.  And don't worry, you have plenty of time to read the book.  It's a really fast read!  Then, don't forget to join us again on August 8 as we discuss Dog On It by Spencer Quinn.

Don't Forget!

Don't forget, the Maud Marks Library will be closed on Monday for the 4th of July holiday.  Don't worry though, just because the building is closed doesn't mean the library is!  Do you need to renew a book or pay a fine?  Click here to go to our online catalog!  Do you need a book?  Find one in our digital media catalog!  Do you need a magazine article or to fix your car?  Check out our databases.  Want a book suggestion?  Read one of our book blogs.&nbs

Congratulations Toby!

The Maud Marks Library would like to congratulate Toby Yuen, winner of the 2011 Friends of the Maud Marks Library Scholarship.  The scholarship recognizes graduating high schools seniors who have given their all while volunteering at the Maud Marks Library.

Toby  has volunteer at the library for several years, putting in hours of shelving and helping set up and take down our Friends booksale.

Congratulations, Toby!  Good luck in all your future endeavors.
