USA LEGO Robotics Camp coming back this summer

                                        

 The United Space Alliance (USA) and The Friends of Freeman Library will be sponsoring two summer sessions of the USA LEGO Robotics Camp for children 7-11 years old.  The sessions run for four weeks.  The first session will be the Saturdays in June (4, 11, 18 and 25) and the second session will be the four Saturdays starting July 16 through August 6.   Campers may choose a session from 1-2:30 pm or 3-4:30 pm.

Twilight Tales

 

 

 

 

 

Family Night, our Thursday evening storytime, now has a new name: Twilight  Tales.  We will have a great story, sing a song or two, and even play with a giant parachute.  Children are welcome to come dressed in their comfy pajamas to enjoy the fun!  Twilight Tales will be on Thursdays at 6:30 PM.  Tickets are required, but they are free and available at the Kids Information Desk starting 30 minutes before the program.  This week's theme will be opposites and shapes.

Books Alive! Week Returns Next Week

Get your calendars ready!  We have several exciting programs planned in the Children's Department for Books Alive! Week -  March 14-18.   Books Alive! Week is sponsored by the Friends of Freeman Library.  Each year during Spring Break, we have a special afternoon program in addition to our regularly scheduled storytimes.  Our storytimes and Family Night will have a Spring theme this week.  Here's a description of the Books Alive! Week programs.

Monday, March 14 - Movie Break 2:30 pm - Join us for a classic family movie.  Snacks will be provided.  Tickets are required.  They are available from the Kids Information Desk starting 30 minutes before the program.

Tuesday, March 15 - 1:00-3:00 pm - Get your face painted, grab a balloon animal, and visit with Clifford the Big Red Dog.  No tickets are required for this event.

Mardi Gras comes to the Children's Department

  Join us as we celebrate Mardi Gras during Toddler and Preschool storytimes February 28-March 2.  We will have a story, fingerplays, and a special surprise at the end of the storytime.  Tickets are a required.  They are free and available starting thirty minutes before the program from the Kids Information Desk.  Don't miss out on the fun, cher!

 

Storybook Opera returns to Freeman on Friday, February 25

Children will be raring for the Rodeo season to start after they see Storybook Opera's production Westward Ho, Carlotta! This music and story program is based on the children's book by Candace Fleming.  It will be coming to Freeman Library on Friday, February 25 at 10:30 am.  This is the story of diva, Carlotta Caruso, who heads out west singing at everyone she meets - including the villains!  The program is designed for children from kindergarten to second grade age.  Tickets are required.  They are free and available at the Kids Information Desk when the library opens at 10:00 am on the morning of the program.

Wonderful Wednesday on February 16

Join us for a special Wonderful Wednesday on February 16 at 4:30 pm.  This afterschool program is held twice a month on the first and third Wednesdays.  It is designed for school-age children five to twelve years old.  The first Wednesday is usually movie day.  The third Wednesday is a craft or special program day.  This Wednesday we'll be having a D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything And Read) program for children.  This program encourages children to read and talk about what books they are reading.   The children can grab some snacks, pick up some cool bookmarks, and get some tips from the librarians about what to read next!  The children will need a ticket for this program.  They are free and available at the Kids Information Desk starting thirty minutes before the program.

Valentine's Day Storytimes

Get ready for Valentine's Day by joining us for Valentine's Day themed storytimes this week.  The Toddler Time, Preschool, and Family Night programs will all feature Valentine's Day stories and a craft.  So you can celebrate Valentine's Day to your heart's content. 

Also, you still have a few more days to show how much you love Texas libraries.  We have cards that you can fill out to let your state representative know your library love story.  The cards will be collected through Thursday, February 10.

Storybook Opera coming in February

Children and families are in for a treat in February when Houston Grand Opera brings two Storybook Opera programs to Freeman Library.  These programs are designed for children of kindergarten through second grade age.  They use music to tell the stories behind two favorite storybooks: Opera Cat by Tess Weaver and Westward Ho, Carlotta by Candace Fleming.

The first program will be Opera Cat on Tuesday, February 1 at 1:30 pm.  Opera Cat is the story of a cat named Alma who loves to sing.  Alma takes center stage on opening night after her mistress, Madame Soso, comes down with laryngitis.

 

Toddler Open Gym on Friday morning

Looking for something fun to do with your toddler this Friday morning?  Come to the Children's Department at Freeman for the Toddler Open Gym from 10:00 am to 11:00 am.  We'll have educational toys, puppets, puzzles and other fun things for you and your toddler to enjoy.  You won't need tickets for this event.  Just come and enjoy yourselves.  Check out a few books while you're here.

Texas Bluebonnet Award Voting Available for Home Schoolers

Bluebonnet voting for Home Schoolers will be available here at the Freeman Library on Tuesday, January 25.  Voting is open to home schooled children who are enrolled in an equivalent home school program for grades 3rd-6th. 

Home schooled children who have read at least 5 of the 2010-2011 Bluebonnet Books are encouraged to come cast your vote for your favorite 2010-2011 Bluebonnet Book!
