Afterschool Craft: Make a Mardi Gras Mask & Hat

Going to the Mardi Gras parades in Kemah or Galveston...or even farther away?  Well, you'll need a fun mask or hat to bring with you.  Join us for our monthly afterschool craft this Wednesday, February 8 at 4:30 pm.  We'll be making a Mardi Gras mask and hat and listening to some fun Mardi Gras music.  We'll also be giving out some Mardi Gras beads so you'll be ready for the parades.  Tickets are required.  They are free and available from the Kids Information Desk starting 30 minutes before the program.

February Programs in the Children's Department

February is the shortest month of the year, but it certainly is packed with holidays and special events!  The Children's Department will have several fun craft and music programs in February to celebrate Black History Month, Valentine's Day, Mardi Gras, and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

We kick off the first week (1/30-2/2) with the theme of "Favorite Stories" for all our storytimes.  We'll have fun with a parachute at the end of the program.

Worldwide Craftsy Meetup Party (Craftsy Fun for the Children, Too!)

Have you wondered about all the yarn projects popping up around the Children's Department and other parts of the library? You can see hats and scarves on statues, teddy bears and polar bears with scarves, a bookmark holder with a knitted sweater, a book cart with a scarf tied around it, and a magazine rack with a cap on top  These are just a reminder that children as well as adults are welcome to attend the Worldwide Craftsy Meetup Party this Thursday, January 26 at Freeman Library.

Homeschoolers: Vote for your favorite Bluebonnet Book

January is the month that Texas children in third through sixth grades vote for their favorite book nominated for the Texas Bluebonnet Award.  Each year the Texas Bluebonnet Award committee draws up a list of 20 books nominated by students, parents, teachers, librarians and others to be considered for the Texas Bluebonnet Award.  Public school children vote for the Texas Bluebonnet Award book at school.  Homeschoolers can vote for their favorite Texas Bluebonnet Award book at Freeman Library next Monday, January 30 in the Children's Department.

Baby Playtime on Friday, January 20
