Spooky Listens for October

One of my favorite things about October is busting out just the right spooky audiobook to get me in the Halloween spirit. There’s just something about taking an already terrifying book, then adding the right narrator and sound effects to make it an even more hair-raising experience.

Be warned – the titles below are not for the faint heart so listen if you dare!

Celebrate the Freedom to Read with Audios

Every year, book communities across the nation get together to celebrate the freedom to read during Banned Books Week. Created in 1982, Banned Books Week aims to create a discussion about censorship and the value of free, open access to information. For more information, check out Banned Books Week and the American Library Association.

The Man with the Golden Voice

Can we please, please take a moment to talk about the wondrous, amazing voice of  Simon Vance? A rockstar of the audiobook world, this British transplant has narrated everything from Oliver Twist to Ian Fleming's James Bond series to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. His voice has charmed authors and listeners alike – not hard to do when you’ve narrated over 700 titles.

The Terrors of the Deep Blue Sea

When you read this blog post, you all have to promise me one thing: hum the theme song from Jaws as you continue reading. In case you didn't know  -  it's Shark Week....

Earbuds as Time Machines

It’s no big secret that I am a huge historical fiction buff. As soon as a new novel comes out, I will happily devour it within days. What better way to escape from reality than to be swept across the deserts of ancient Egypt, reliving the British Invasion of the 1960's or trapped in the intrigue of a medieval English court?

So far, this summer has been a great one  for historical audio junkies such as myself – seven new historical fiction novels are currently on the NY Times Best Seller List. Need a little help traveling back to another time or place? Check out some of my favorites below:
