2010 Lit Fest Round-Up

Aldine ISD Teen Literature FestivalThis past Saturday the Aldine Branch of the Harris County Public Library had the opportunity to participate in Aldine ISD’s 2010 Teen Literature Festival. Hundreds of students visited the branch’s booth to get information about library cards, learn about activities held at the branch, and details about this year’s Summer Reading Program.

The Library + Art Cars + Dan Aykroyd = FUN!

Dan Aykroyd and young fanThe Art Car Parade hosted by The Orange Show for Visionary Arts was held this past weekend in downtown Houston. The Harris County Public Library participated in the event for the second year in a row by having a booth in the parade’s Fun Zone. Know this, fun was certainly had. Not only was HCPL able to share information about its services to many parade goers, but it was able to flex its artistic muscles as well. Three art book carts were on display, which were created by teen volunteers from various branches. Plus, kids had the opportunity to create their own art cars with a craft provided by the library.

Houston Art Car Parade This Weekend

Book CartIt’s that time of year again. It’s time for The Orange Show Center for Visionary Art’s annual Art Car Parade. For the second year now the Harris County Public Library will have a tent at the event. So while you are taking in all the art in motion stop by and visit HCPL. We will have information about our services, a craft for children and our own art book carts on display. Aldine’s book cart this year is called, “Robo Dumpty.” The parade starts at 1pm, but come early for the festivities.

Robots at Aldine are an Automatic Success

The Aldine Branch Library must thank Jefferson Davis High School’s robotics club, Robatos Locos, for taking the time to visit with the teens. This is the third year Robatos Locos has been out to visit, and each year the club somehow outdoes the last. A record number were in attendance for exciting demonstrations and a chance to operate robots of all shapes and sizes.

Web 2.Yo! Cruising Along

Students at Netbooks

It’s been two weeks since Web 2.Yo! started back, and we’ve had a blast. There are so many cool things on-line to stumble across each class. So far teens have discovered some new sites involving music and art. This week we’ll focus on videos. If you missed the music and art classes don’t worry because we’ll bring them back soon. Stay tuned.

Robots Invade Aldine!

Toy Robot and Astronauts

Teens, this Thursday stop by the meeting room to checkout the robots. That’s right, robots. The robotics club from Jefferson Davis High School is coming by to not only share stories, but its robots as well. You’ll get a demo on how the robots work, plus a chance to make them do your bidding. That’s this Thursday, April 15th, at 4pm.

It's Back! It's Back!

Man at industrial machineThat’s right. Web 2.Yo! is back! Teens, come and learn about some Web sites you’ve probably never heard of and you’re totally mad at us for not showing them to you earlier because they are so awesome. For the next five weeks we’ll be in the meeting room from 3:30 to 4:30 every Wednesday. Space is limited, so it’s first-come, first-served. This week’s topic will be Web sites for Music Lovers.

Snow Day

Do you guys remember the snow we had at the beginning of the month? The Aldine Branch staff sure does. In fact, we made a video highlighting how we spent our breaks on that day.

You can check it out on our YouTube Channel as well, along with other videos.

Teen Programs for the New Year

Teens, be looking for new programming in 2010 at the Aldine Branch. The Digital Storytelling class will be winding down for a while, as will the Study Hall on Tuesday. Don’t worry because they will be back. Until then, be on the lookout for expanded computer classes for teens and some different programs.
