Movies for the holiday @ Your Library

Since the Fairbanks Branch will be closed November 24-27, this is the time to start thinking about visiting the library and checking out some entertaining movies to watch during the holiday period.  The library has a good collection of movies from which to choose--action & adventure, mysteries & suspense, anime films, romantic dramas and comedies, cartoons, and many more.  Don't wait until it's too late to find just those movies you want to watch and share with family and friends during the holiday.  See you soon and Happy Viewing!

Finding Your Roots @Your Library

At one time or another, we all become interested in finding out about our individual family history--the family origins, how the family name came about, family ancestors, and other family history.  Various books are available to help with researching family history, and we have a new display of several recommended titles to guide you on your search.  The Harris County Public Library also provides access to genealogical databases which provide comprehensive treasuries of family lineage and local histories and which can be used to trace family lineage and American culture from the original 13 colonies.  Happy Reading and Researching!

Pumpkin Time Storytime @ Your Library

It's almost the end of the month of October and time to celebrate the season with a Pumpkin Time Storytime at the Fairbanks Branch Library.  The library will host a family storytime with stories about pumpkins and the harvest season on Monday, October 31 at 7 pm in the library meeting room.  Please join us for this special storytime to share stories, a craft, and refreshments.  See you then!  Happy Reading!

A Harvest of Books

It's that time of the year when the weather begins to turn cooler, leaves start to turn different colors, and we start to think about the various holidays to be celebrated from now to the end of the year.  To help you find good picture books about the changing season, we have created a new display of titles to check out and share with youngsters, "A Harvest of Books."  Our selection includes books about harvesting, the Fall season, and, of course, pumpkins!  Please browse the display on your next visit to the library and I bet you will find some books to take home.  If not, please ask us and we will find what you need.  Happy Harvest Reading!

Picture Books with a Latin Flavor

Looking for some children's picture books to help celebrate Hispanic-Heritage Month?  Just come on in to the Fairbanks Branch Library and browse our latest book display, "Celebrating Hispanic-Heritage Month," and you will find some recommended stories to check out and share with children.  And, many of the books are bilingual so you can read the story in both Spanish and English.  See you soon!  and Happy Reading!

Popular Picks for Your Reading

Don't know what to read next?  Want some suggestions?  Then stop in here at the Fairbanks Branch Library and browse our Popular Picks display to find books that the library staff personally recommend for your reading pleasure.  If you don't see something on the display that catches your attention, then let us know what you like to read and we can help you find some books for your interests.  We love to talk about books, so please ask us.  Happy Reading !

Fiesta Story Time

Calling all preschoolers!  Please join us for a special Fiesta theme at our Preschool Story Time for Tuesday, September 13 at 10:30 AM in the library meeting room.  Our Fiesta Story Time will feature stories, songs, and a craft with a Hispanic flavor.  See you then and Happy Reading!

Under the Sea

The weather continues to be hot and dry here in the Houston area, so I like to think and read about places that have a lot of water and are much cooler.  Some of the staff here at the Fairbanks Branch have selected books about seas and oceans and the various creatures that live in them and placed them on display in the children's area of the library close to the entrance from the lobby.  Please browse the "Under the Sea" display on your next visit to the library and at least you can read about some places that are definitely cooler and wetter.  Stay cool and happy reading!

Dinner & A Movie Recommendations

It's time to treat yourself to dinner and a movie...at home!  If you are like me, you watch more movies in DVD format than actually going out to the local theater.  Even watching movies at home, you can treat yourself to a nice dinner--home cooked or order in--and then settle back in a comfortable chair or on a sofa and watch a movie you have been wanting to see.  To help you make some movie selections as well as different types of food to have, we have created a new display of movies and recipe books--"Dinner & A Movie."  On your next visit to the library, please browse the display and select some movies and recipe books to take home.  Happy Reading and Happy Viewing!

Singing the Schoolhouse Blues @ Your Library

Well, it's almost that time of the year when summer vacation is over and classes for the Fall semester start at the local schools.  To help younger students make the transition from summertime activities to "reading, writing, and arithmetic" we have created the "Singing the Schoolhouse Blues" display of picture books about schools, teachers, and students.  Please browse the books in the display and you should find some fun stories to read before it's "back to school!"  Happy Reading!
