Bulletin Board Smorgasbord

If you have not seen the latest designs for the bulletin boards in the meeting room here at Fairbanks Branch Library, then please take time to take a look.  The designs cover a wide range of interests, including spiders, ants, popcorn, cats, books, and spaghetti and meatballs falling as rain.  You can see the designs in person or take a look at the branch photos section where I have posted some pictures of these latest bulletin boards.  Cheers!

Talk Like a Pirate @ Your Library

Did you know that September 19 is the offical "Talk Like a Pirate Day"?  Well, now you do and to help all landlubbers to get in the mood, the Fairbanks Branch Library has created a display of fiction and nonfiction books about pirates.  These books can really help you get "hooked" (Arrrgh!) on all matters piratical!  So, if you want to learn more about pirates, please weigh anchor and sail for the library and we can help you find what you need.  Yo Ho Ho!

Children's Fiction "Gems" Anyone?

One of the fun things I like to do is browse the new children's fiction books that are added to the collection at the library.  It is a pleasure to find a new book that has a richness of characterization as well as a compelling story.  Such books have a sparkle or brightness to them that draw me into the story and just keep me reading--often straight through to the end with no breaks.  These books I like to add it to my list of what I call "gems" of children's fiction.  And, fortunately, there are a lot of good writers who write for young audiences.  So, my question to you is if you have read any children's fiction lately that you would rate as a "gem"?

Pajama Storytime @ Your Library

As I noted in an earlier blog entry, Fairbanks Branch Library hosted a  bedtime storytime at 7:00 pm on Monday, August 31, to say "aloha" to the end of summer vacation.  Children were encouraged to wear pajamas and slippers to the storytime and many of the Fairbanks Library staff wore their pajamas and slippers and robes all day to celebrate.  Please look at the branch photos section to view several photos we took of the staff wearing their pjs (check out those bunny slippers!), and of the children (more bunny slippers!!), and myself during storytime.  Guess I need to get some bunny slippers!

Are You Ready for Some Football?

Okay, gridiron and 'Friday night lights' fans, football season is on the way!  It is that time of year to get out your caps and sweatshirts with the logos for your favorite team(s) and make sure you stock up on your favorite game time snacks when you watch the game in front of the TV or in the stands.  To help you get in the spirit, the Fairbanks Library has a special book display featuring books about how the game is played, the NFL, the SuperBowl, college football, and more.  If we do not have the book you want, ask us to find a copy through our interlibrary loan service.  And for those who like "tailgaiting" before a game, check our cookbook section for ideas for some tasty eats.

Pajama and Slippers Storytime

Grab your favorite pajamas and slippers and head on down to the Fairbanks Branch Library for our monthly evening storytime which is scheduled for Monday, August 31 at 7:00 pm.  Bring your favorite teddy bear or plush toy with you and enjoy bedtime stories and a craft as we bid "aloha!" to the end of summer vacation.  Some of the library staff will be wearing their pajamas and slippers (bunny slippers for at least one of the staff) and have their special plush toy with them, so please be sure to visit the circulation desk and say "Hello!"  See you soon!

Of Summer Reading Lists We Sing

It is that time of the summer when many high school students seriously think about reading a book from the Summer Reading List for their grade level.  To assist our high school customers in selecting a book to read, the Fairbanks Branch Library created a display of the books for the 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade reading lists.  Also, we have printed copies of the lists for your convenience.  School starts soon, so if you are a high school student in the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District, visit the library to find the book you want to read and be prepared for your English class.  As always as part of our customer services, if our copies of the book you want to read are already checked out, we will request a copy for you.  So, be prepared.  Read!

A Spider You Can Like

Spiders!  Most people have a strong reaction to spiders—either you love them, or hate them.  I like spiders and just let them do their own thing—I don’t bother you, you don’t bother me.  And they do get rid of those pesky flies and mosquitoes.  However, regardless of how you feel about spiders, there is at least one spider that everyone can enjoy—that Trickster Spider known as Anansi!

Lazy but smart, Anansi just loves to play tricks on his neighbors, especially when it involves getting food without having to work for it!  Some of my favorite picture book stories about Anansi are written by the nationally known story teller, Eric A. Kimmel, and are good choices for a fun, laugh-out-loud read for kids and adults.
