Once Upon a Midnight Dreary: 2012 Edgar Allan Poe Award Nominations

Mystery Writers of America Logo-copyrighted materialAnnually, on the anniversary of Edgar Allan Poe's birth, the Mystery Writers of America announce the nominations for the aptly named Edgar Awards honoring "excellence in mystery." Prize categories include Best Novel, Best First Novel by an American Author and Best Fact Crime, as well as Best Juvenile and Young Adult Mysteries.

The list of past winners is chock full of above-the-title names such as James Lee Burke, Elmore Leonard and S. J. Rozan. So just because you haven't heard of some of this year's nominees, doesn't mean you won't be hearing a lot more about them in the future.

Honor and Valor

This week, 23-year-old Dakota Meyer received the Medal of Honor for his military service in Afghanistan. He is one of six who have received the distinction during the war in Afghanistan.  Meyer defied orders to stand down and instead charged into heavy combat five times, saving the lives of 36 Americans and Afghans in the process.  The Medal of Honor is the military's highest decoration and has been awarded since 1861

audie awardsThey might not receive as much attention as The Oscars, but each year The Audies highlight the best in audiobooks from the previous year.  The Audies feature 30 categories, including Biography/Memoir, Fiction, History, Humor, Solo Narration, and Original Work.  The awards will be announced at the Audies Gala on May 24, 2011, but you probably won't see the winners strutting down the red carpet on television.

A Night at the Museum

MFAH LogoLast night, I had the pleasure of attending Museum of Fine Arts, Houston's celebration of education and community partners. At this event, Harris County Public Library received A Place For All People Award. This distinction is awarded to community collaborators for longtime dedication to the arts and education. Over the years, the library has partnered with the museum for various programs. Several branches have hosted weeklong Summer Art Camps, taken free bus trips to the museum, as well as transformed library public spaces into temporary art galleries for traveling art exhibits. The benefits to our community extend beyond the library branch.

The Edgars

The Mystery Writers of America will be announcing the winners of the 2010 Edgar Allan Poe Awards on April 29. Awards are listed for several categories, but I’m always most interested in the best novel.

Mad Men @ the Emmy Awards

I felt a little torn when I saw this year's Emmy nominations.  My husband and I have just recently become obsessed with the AMC series Mad Men about early 1960s advertising executives in NYC.  Mad Men has been nominated for several awards, including "Outstanding Drama Series" and "Outstanding Lead Male Actor in a Drama Series."  But House and Hugh Laurie, respectively, have both been nominated in the same categories!  Whose a girl to root for!?!
