35th Anniversary of Three Mile Island Nuclear Power Plant Accident

On March 28, 1979, at 4:00 am EST, a series of accidents began at the Three Mile Island Nuclear Power Plant on the Susquehanna River, which is 10 miles southeast of Harrisburg, PA.  Safety was reevaluated for existing nuclear generating operations after this.  Because of equipment and other failures, Three Mile Island came close to a meltdown of its uranium core, which could have caused extensive radiation contamination.
