The Countdown to the Summer Reading Program!

May is a big month for libraries with Harris County Public Library.  We're getting ready for one of our busiest seasons - summer.   The 2013 Summer Reading Program for Harris County kicks off in 25 days on Monday, June 3.  Freeman Library will start having special Thursday afternoon programs for children in 28 days on Thursday, June 6.

Right now,  we're busy visiting schools to talk about the summer reading program, ordering craft supplies for summer activities and making sure we have enough summer reading registration materials.   We're also getting our decorations ready for opening day.  Today, two of our dedicated and brave volunteers, Elizabeth and Quin Shepperd, decorated two of the bulletin boards we'll be using to display the reading progress of our young readers.  As they read books, children will receive a paper footprint to put their name on.   We will put the footprints up along the bulletin boards and walls of the Children's Department.

This year's theme for the Summer Reading Program is "Have Book - Will Travel".  The artwork commissioned for this summer is by Anna Dewdney - the author/illustrator of the "llama llama..." series.  We encourage you to stop by the Children's Department to see the bold and colorful artwork created by Anna Dewdney.   Also, we'd like to thank the  Shepperds for their creativity and hard work in displaying this artwork on the bulletin boards.   We're excited about having the children help us decorate with all those footprints!
