Digital Media Catalog Tip: Returning eBooks Early!

While you unfortunately cannot return eAudio titles in early, did you know that you are able to return eBooks early?

Library View is highlighted in the red box.

To return an eBook early, you will need to use Adobe Digital Editions.  In Adobe Digital Editions, you will need to click on "library View" icon which is located in the top left corner of the program.

Item Options arrow is in the red box.Next, if you move your mouse over the cover of the title you want to return, a triangle will appear in the upper left corner of the book jacket.  If you click on this triangle, a drop down menu will appear.  "Return Borrowed Item" is one of the options.

Selecting this will return the item and delete it off your computer, but not any portable reading device that you may have transferred the title to.

1. Can you please tell me why we are not able to check WMA & MP3 books back in? I would think there would be a lot less wait time on books people would like to check out. 2. Also, I can understand putting up a title that someone has requested that is a series book # of say 5, but it would be nice for the rest of us who haven't read that particular series if you might think to put up the previous series books? Thanks

Thank you for taking the time to write us!

The audiobook publishers have set it up in our licensing agreements to not allow early returns on the WMA and MP3 titles.  This is not something we can control ourselves.  If we could allow it we would.  Hopefully this decision by the publishers will change as digital titles become increasingly popular.

The second question you ask is a bit more challenging to answer, but I will try.  With reduced budgets, it becomes increasingly difficult to order older digital titles.   The majority of our budget for digital titles is spent on the current high demand titles that are released monthly.  Even though our focus is on high demand titles, we are still unable to purchase all the titles we would like each month.  This is the reason that we cannot always go back and purchase missing titles in a series as soon as we would like.

Sometimes we are just not aware that a title is in a series or that we are missing a title in a series.  The publishers who upload their titles to our vendors catalog do not always list that a title we are interested in is part of a series.  It is also not uncommon for the series number to be listed incorrectly in their catalog.

A third reason why we are missing titles is that, sometimes, the titles just are not available.  The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher is a perfect example.  The titles that we are missing in our catalog are not available for us to purchase.  We would purchase them if they ever do become available.  Whenever you see a series that is missing some titles, it would be very helpful if you would send us a suggestion for the missing titles.  This way we can look into the series and possibly pick up the titles with any extra money that becomes available.  The suggestion form is located here.

Thanks again for your question and I hope that your overall experience with the HCPL Digital Media Catalog is a positive one!
