Happy Birthday Katie DiCamillo

Versatile, award-winning American author Kate DiCamillo writes well-crafted, often multilayered realistic fiction and fantasy stories for children. With both beautiful language and characters full of personality, her books are infused with a sweet tone and threads of humor; while not shying away from substantive themes. However, no matter what the story, DiCamillo weaves gentle humor throughout.

I could not miss this opportunity to share a few of her books; for she is one of my all time favorite children's authors.  I hope that you enjoy them as much as I have.

The Tale of Despereaux: Being the Story of a Mouse, a Princess, some Soup, and a Spool of Thread

The adventures of Desperaux Tilling, a small mouse of unusual talents, the princess that he loves, the servant girl who longs to be a princess, and a devious rat determined to bring them all to ruin.

Because of Winn-Dixie

DiCamillo's beloved Newbery Honor book is the story of 10-year-old India Opal Buloni, who describes her first summer in the town of Naomi, Florida, and all the good things that happen to her because of her big ugly dog, Winn-Dixie.

The Tiger Rising

Rob, who passes the time in his rural Florida community by wood carving, is drawn by his spunky but angry friend Sistine into a plan to free a caged tiger.

Bink & Gollie

In a brilliant collaboration, best-selling authors Kate DiCamillo and Alison McGhee, along with acclaimed illustrator Tony Fucile, introduce an outrageously funny pair of friends.

Meet Bink and Gollie, two precocious little girls - one tiny, one tall, and both utterly irrepressible. Setting out from their super-deluxe tree house and powered by plenty of peanut butter (for Bink) and pancakes (for Gollie), they share three comical adventures involving painfully bright socks, an impromptu trek to the Andes, and a most unlikely marvelous companion. No matter where their roller skates take them, at the end of the day they will always be the very best of friends. Full of quick-witted repartee, this brainchild of Newbery Medalist Kate DiCamillo and award-winning author Alison McGhee is a hilarious ode to exuberance and camaraderie, imagination and adventure, brought to life through the delightfully kinetic images of Tony Fucile.

Louise: The Adventures of a Chicken (picture book)

The Magician's Elephant

When ten-year-old orphan Peter Augustus Duchene encounters a fortune teller in the marketplace one day and she tells him that his sister, who is presumed dead, is in fact alive, he embarks on a remarkable series of adventures as he desperately tries to find her.

Mercy Watson to the Rescue

After Mercy the pig snuggles to sleep with the Watsons, all three awaken with the bed teetering on the edge of a big hole in the floor.

The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane

Edward Tulane, a cold-hearted and proud toy rabbit, loves only himself until he is separated from the little girl who adores him and travels across the country, acquiring new owners and listening to their hopes, dreams, and histories.
