"To Infinity and Beyond!"

Lately, I have been hearing about the awesome special effects used in the theater released movie "Avatar". It seems like every day someone new is raving about it and though I have not see it yet myself I began to think of all the times a movie has captured our attention with some new state-of-the-art special effects. So let’s take a journey back in time to movies that amazed us.

Star Wars (1977) director George Lucas used groundbreaking visual effects combined with sound to capture the audience and who could forget the dynamic duo of CP3O and R2D2. Tron (1982) was the first of its kind to use computer graphics to create a virtual video game world. Back to the Future (1985) besides the visually stunning DeLorean, this film developed split screen to allow the main character to act out three parts. Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988) pushed the envelope on how far computer animation was able to achieve at the time by merging both human characters alongside animations seamlessly.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) contains several stunning visual effects, such as characters morphing. Jurassic Park (1993): used the same special effects company as T2. Toy Story (1995): was the first film to be completely shot with computer generated effects. While at first this doesn’t seem like a time consuming task, one soon realizes that each hair on a character’s head had to be digitally created. Matrix (1999) introduced us to the “bullet time” effect. Lord of the Rings (2001) & The Polar Express (2004) both have “motion capture” technology. This is recorded by inputting the human movements through markers located on the actor’s body.
