It Came from the Library! Teen Read Week Events @ HCPL

Teen Read Week 2012 Header: I Came from the LibrarySure, many of us with teens in the house might prefer that they read Anna Karenina, or A Tale of Two Cities instead of manga or the latest installment of that Vampire mega-saga. But, you know what? We’d be fools to say a word about it. You see, if a teen is reading for pleasure, it doesn’t matter all that much what s/he is reading. The same synapses are firing and the same kinds of connections are being made in the brain whether a teen is reading Fullmetal Alchemist or For Whom the Bell Tolls.

Don’t believe me? Eavesdrop on a group of teens discussing a story they’ve all read not because they had to, but because they wanted to, you’ll notice the talk can get pretty complex--even philosophical. You know what else you’ll notice? The same teen who slouches at the dinner table every evening answering every question with a roll of the eyes or a barely audible monosyllable, is genuinely fired-up—is genuinely excited about *gasp* reading.

Teen Read Week is the annual initiative of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), that sets aside seven days each year to encourage teens to read for pleasure and to take advantage of libraries’ free reading materials. Simple as that. Here are some of the events Harris County Public Library Branches have planned:
