Join Us in October: Gulf Coast Reads Book Discussion

Jacket for Remember Ben Clayton by Stephen HarriganGulf Coast Reads is an annual program for readers on the Texas Gulf Coast to read and discuss the same book. The title selected for this year’s Gulf Coast Reads is Remember Ben Clayton: A Novel by Texas author Stephen Harrigan.

We will have a book discussion for Remember Ben Clayton at La Porte Community Library on Wednesday, October 8, 10:30 – 11:30 am in the Meeting Room. The event is free and registration is not required.

The novel revolves around a bronze statue commissioned by Lamar Clayton to memorialize his son Ben who was killed in World War I. The artist commissioned for the sculpture is Francis ‘Gil’ Gilheaney, a New Yorker who relocated to San Antonio along with his wife and adult daughter Maureen, who works as his assistant. The characters in the novel are richly drawn and memorable.

One of the underlying themes of the book is the power of art to move us, and the way an artist must wrestle to bring a work to completion. Another focus is the relationship of parent to child and the misunderstandings that are inevitable. Also explored is the erosive effect of secrets upon relationships.

Remember Ben Clayton is compelling historical fiction that will appeal to both men and women. It is available from Harris County Public Library in book format as well as audiobook on CD, eBook through HCPL Digital Media Catalog, and as an eAudio through OneClickdigital.

If you would like to be part of this community-wide event, read or listen to Remember Ben Clayton and join us for the book discussion at the library on October 8.
