Looking back: Galveston, September 8-9, 1900

Book Jacket of Isaac's Storm/Erik LarsonToday (September 8) is the 110th anniversary of the Galveston storm of 1900. There are many good books about the 1900 hurricane that are available at the library. One of my favorite accounts is Isaac’s Storm: a man, a time, and the deadliest hurricane in history/Erik Larson. Others at the library include: Galveston and the 1900 storm: catastrophe and catalyst/Patricia Bellis Bixel and Elizabeth Hayes Turner; Through a Night of Horrors: voices from the 1900 Galveston storm/edited by Casey Edward Green and Shelly Henley Kelly; The Galveston Hurricane/Kristine Brennan, and a children’s fiction book The Great Storm: the hurricane diary of J. T. King, Galveston, Texas, 1900/Lisa Waller Rogers.

For an interesting and nearby road trip, the Galveston Historical Foundation has an ongoing presentation of the documentary The Great Storm.
