Sea of Monsters Movie!

Okay, I am geeking out over the cast and scratching my head over the fact that the second book in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series is being made into a movie.  Sea of Monsters is due in theaters on March 15 2013!  There is only one major cast change from the first movie.  Piers Brosnan will not be returning as Chiron. Tear… But… Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans will rejoice as Giles, aka Anthony Head will be filling Brosnan’s shoes.  YAY!!!!  Other news is Houston native and supporting actress in the Hunger Games movie, Leven Rambin has been cast as Clarisse, daughter of Hades.  That one confuses me a little because Clarisse is supposed to be a tough, somewhat homely character and Leven Rambin just played the extraordinary Glimmer in the Hunger Games.  Go figure.  Anyway in further casting news for this movie Hermes will be portrayed by Serenity and Castle star Nathan Fillion.  Woot!  Happy Dance!  Seriously, I was dancing when I saw that.  The biggest name and joining the series though is portraying the god Dionysus.  Oscar nominated actor Stanley Tucci is going to play the irascible Wine and Insanity god.

The head scratching comes in when you start to figure out that [spoiler!} Chronos’ involvement in the plot to take down Olympus was completely cut out of The Lightning Thief movie.  That and the fact they aged up Percy and Annabeth  (and made Grover actually look his age) so much, that neither character has much time left in school.  Not to mention if they do all the books in the series and then start delving into the Heroes of Olympus series.  This series may not have reached Harry Potter or Hunger Games level of insanity but it is incredibly popular.  With the influx of popular teen books being turned into movies, Sea of Monsters might actually be much more successful then the first movie.  Or it could just be a moderately successful series akin to the Diary of a Wimpy Kid movies.  We’ll see I suppose.  What do you think about this news?
