Share a Book (or the Ability to Read It)
This story from StoryCorps, told by beloved author Walter Dean Myers, is an excellent reminder that someone close to us -- a co-worker, family member or friend -- may desire assistance with reading, and also a reminder to never miss an opportunity to read aloud. Volunteer as a tutor through the library literacy program or call Literacy Advance of Houston or the Houston READ Commission. Dig Up a Good Book and read aloud to your young child or relvative in the library's summer reading club. Help an adult who has trouble reading because of a disability or impairment to sign up for the adult version of summer reading club, ReaderNation. They can meet the program goals by listening to books on CD, through the library's digital media catalog or you can read aloud to them.
