On the Shelf: Guardians of Being

Sometimes we all need a little "nice" in our lives. We need to be inspired. We need to be heartened. Right here, right now, we need to stop, look, listen and reconnect with all that is good, kind, generous and supportive in the world.

For all of the above, look no further than Guardians of Being, a delightful book by spiritual teacher Eckhart Tolle, with art by Patrick McDonnell, creator of my favorite cartoon, Mutts.  Lovers of cats and dogs will especially appreciate Tolle’s wise words and McDonnell’s drawings.
“The vital function that pets fulfill in this world hasn’t been fully recognized,” Tolle writes. “They keep millions of people sane.”  Passages that also spoke to me include: “I have lived with many Zen masters, all of them cats...” and “Dogs offer the precious opportunity, even to people who are trapped in their egos, of loving and being loved unconditionally."
I’ve read Guardians of Being daily during the past week. Each time, I’ve found words and pictures that encourage me to pause, to smile and to remember how important it is to “feel at home in the Now, to celebrate life by being completely present.” I’ve also found a gift worth giving to those I love this holiday season.
Let me know if Guardians of Being speaks to you, too!
