A Spider You Can Like
Spiders! Most people have a strong reaction to spiders—either you love them, or hate them. I like spiders and just let them do their own thing—I don’t bother you, you don’t bother me. And they do get rid of those pesky flies and mosquitoes. However, regardless of how you feel about spiders, there is at least one spider that everyone can enjoy—that Trickster Spider known as Anansi!
Lazy but smart, Anansi just loves to play tricks on his neighbors, especially when it involves getting food without having to work for it! Some of my favorite picture book stories about Anansi are written by the nationally known story teller, Eric A. Kimmel, and are good choices for a fun, laugh-out-loud read for kids and adults. If you don’t know Anansi—and even if you do—there are more books available featuring this scamp of a spider. What are your favorites?
In Anansi and the Moss-Covered Rock, Anansi uses a strange moss-covered rock in the forest to trick all the other animals, until Little Bush Deer decides he needs to learn a lesson.
Anansi and the Magic Stick tells the story of the day Anansi steals Hyena’s magic stick so he won’t have to do the chores. But, when the stick’s magic won’t stop, Anansi gets more than he bargained for in the form of a flood..
When Anansi invites Turtle to a party in Anansi’s Party Time just to play a trick on him, Turtle plays a trick on Anansi at a party of his own.
