Summer Reading Fun Starts June 2!

We are gearing up for another action-packed Summer Reading Program kicking off June 2 and running through August 9. This year, we focus on the lighter side of science because, like reading, it is all about discovery, and we’ll be offering programs designed to entertain, educate and spark your curiosity no matter what your age.

Here are just a few of the highlights:

Babies: Fizz Boom Read!
Sure, they’re not reading themselves yet, but encouraging early literacy is a big part of HCPL's mission. There are lots of fun activities you can do with your littlest ones that build skills needed for reading: read to your baby, of course, but also sing songs about your day, talk to your baby about what’s going on around you, and, most importantly, come to the library’s Baby Time programs to learn more!

Kids: Fizz Boom Read!
We’ll have mad scientists and wacky experiments, visits from Houston Museum of Natural Science experts to talk about mummies and minerals and more, as well as the ever-popular Jungle Jim and his menagerie of creepy crawlers, and MFAH Art Camps at selected branches.

 • Teens: Spark a Reaction!
We’ll have lots of hands-on activities for teens: we’ll make rockets, soap, and instant lava lamps. We’ll get ready for the Zombie Apocalypse. We’ll even explore the science of ice cream sundaes and time travel with Dr. Who parties. Of course, we’ll have a ton of just plain fun with gaming, movies and more.

Adults: Literary Elements
Variety is the key word here. Our programs run the gamut from astronomy classes to visits by local roller derby squad, the Missfits. We’ll also help you get in shape for summer trips to the beach with Zumba, T’ai Chi Chih, power-walking and yoga. If you’re curious about eBooks but don’t know where to start, we have lots tech classes on the schedule, including iPad, Kindle and Android tutorials. If you’re in a more creative mood, we’ll have a presentation by Katy MakerSpace, watercolor classes, writers' workshops, needlecraft clubs—we’ll even build ladybug houses for your garden!

For full listings of programs and events, pick up a schedule at your HCPL branch or visit our Events Calendar.

As always, our main purpose is to encourage you and your whole family to read for fun this summer, and while it’s a scientific fact that reading is its own reward, we also know that a little extra motivation never hurts, so we have some cool incentives* to keep you reading and logging your books all summer long!

• All babies who complete the program will receive a “Read to Me” bib
• All children who read 10 books or 500 minutes will receive a book and certificate. If they read 50 or more books, they will receive a special ribbon.
• Teens who read 5 books or 600 minutes will receive “Spark a Reaction” earbuds.
• Adults who read 5 books or 600 minutes will receive a “Literary Elements” coffee mug.
• A Kindle Fire will be awarded to one teen and one adult in random drawings of all teens and adults who complete program requirements.

It’s summer! It’s time for you and the whole family to make time to read and explore just for the fun of it, and we’re here to help you make the most of every minute of it!
