Yoga in storytime? You bet! Don't miss this great opportunity to enjoy this free program for families!!!  Yoga is an ancient science that helps to create health and well-being by building awareness, strength, and flexibility in both mind and body.  Breathing exercises and relaxation are incorporated into each class.  Both are so important for growing minds and bodies. Many people believe that the benefits include stress and pain relief, improved circulation and digestion, better body alignment, increased concentration, deeper, more relaxed breathing, and a sense of well-being and inner peace. Yoga is a fun way for children to develop these important skills in a supportive, non-competitive environment.  

This week, certified children's yoga instructor Melissa Menke, will help us travel into the rain forest!  During the program Melissa will guide us through an adventure that interweaves story, song, games and poses.  Classes are structured as well as spontaneous, allowing participants to help 'create' the journey. Doing a pose perfectly is not the aim of kids yoga, which nourishes a child's inner strength and self acceptance. 

This program will be in place of our regularly scheduled Pre-school storytime @ 10 am. Extend your child's experience through books! Below you will find a few of my suggestions.

Please be aware that space is limited. The safety of the children we serve is our first consideration. Room capacity, as determined by the fire Marshall, as well as our desire for a high quality program, does necessitate limits.

Stretch it Yoga by Kyla Wilson.

Stretch it Yoga describes how this ancient exercise has become a popular way to keep fit for people around the world. Photos demonstrate stretches, and simple text teaches children about the different styles of yoga, which poses affect which parts of the body, and the important elements of breathing and meditation.

 

You Are a Lion! and Other Fun Yoga Poses by Taeeun Yoo.

With simple instructions and bright, clear illustrations, award-winning artist Taeeun Yoo invites children to enjoy yoga by assuming playful animal poses. And she sparks their imagination further by encouraging them to pretend to be the animal,  to flutter like a butterfly, hiss like a snake, roar like a lion and more. Yoga is great for kids because it promotes flexibility and focus and it's relaxing good fun! The charming pictures of children and animals and the lyrical text make this gentle introduction to yoga a book to be treasured.

The ABCs of Yoga for Kids  by Teresa Anne Power

The ABCs of Yoga for Kids uses the alphabet, rhyming vignettes, and colorful illustrations to introduce children to yoga in a kid-friendly way. Each of the fifty-six different poses featured in the book delightfully promote flexibility, strength, and coordination while encouraging children to incorporate healthy activity into their daily lives. Children have a lot of fun learning new positions, new letters, and new ideas. This book will delight and bring joy to the early yoga practitioner.

The Happiest Tree : A Yoga Story by Uma Krishnaswami     

Meena is excited about the class play, an improved' version of Red Riding Hood but when her teacher insists Meena be one of the trees she is miserable. 'I can't', Meena says, 'I'm too clumsy'. Then, Meena gets convinced to try out the new children's yoga class. Over time, Meena learns to breathe slowly and deeply and to make herself quiet inside. But during rehearsals she still has trouble being a quiet, steady tree. The night of the play, Meena trips on her branches as she walks on stage but she manages to calm herself and becomes the happiest tree in the forest!
