Get Ready to Vote

The Galena Park Branch will once again serve as an Early Voting location for the residents of Harris County.  One of the most commonly discussed races will be the Governor's Election.  We have already received a lot of questions regarding this election.  The main thing to remember is that you have to be a registered voter.  If you are not a registered voter, please come by the library and complete a registered voter application.  The deadline to become a registered voter is October 4, 2010.  Becoming a registered voter is extremely quick and efficient.  If you need any help completing a registered voter application, feel free to ask any of our staff to assist you.  Within the next few months, the branch will be receiving a voting guide that is free to the general public.

Back To School

Now that the Summer of 2010 is almost over, it's time to get ready to go back to school.  A lot of you spent a huge considerable time with us at the library and we thank you for keeping us busy and makeing the library a fun place to be.  As you start to think about returning to school, don't forget that the library is here to help you fulfill your summer reading requirements.  After school starts, we are here to help you find books, order books from other branches, and for some you advanced students, help you do your research.  The library has 24 Hour WiFI access and is free and available on demand.  When we are closed, just get near our branch and pick up the signal.  We also have an excellent collection of online databases.  The datatabases are often times good tools to help with your academic research, brows, or just to look at.  Then again, we offer the human touch.  If you need help, just ask.  We are here for you!!

Are You Prepared: Hurricane Season is Here.

The hurricane season is here.  As you know, a few hurricanes have come and gone.  The question to ask is, "Are we ready?"  In the event that you are not or maybe perhaps almost ready, I would like to give you some tips and a few tools to use or pack in your emergency kit.  Our library currently has a lot of small hurricane tracker disks.  These disks are preloaded with a lot of information that should be studied prior to a hurricane.  It comes with evacuation routes, emergency phone numbers, information for flood insurance, flood facts, and a history of recorded storms.  What I like about this little disk is that it also provides live hurricane tracking!  Come on to the library and we will be more than happy to give you a copy.
