GRINCH VISITS LA PORTE STORYTIME

Tuesday's storytime had a surprise visitor, that creature who's heart was two sizes too small. Lucky for us we got to see Mr. Grinch after he found out the true meaning of Christmas and his heart had grown 3 sizes bigger. The children were delighted to meet him and a good time was had by all.

Finding Quiet in the Holiday Season

Cover of Into Great SilenceIn the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, finding silence isn’t always easy. The library has a movie that has silence as its setting: Into Great Silence. This documentary was done by German filmmaker Philip Gröning. It shows the life of Carthusian monks at the French Grande Chartreuse monastery as they go about their daily lives of prayer and work. There is no narration, no background music, and no artificial lighting. The result is an unusual film experience. At first, watching a film without narration and background music feels odd, but after awhile the film gives an experience of stillness and quiet. It also contains some gorgeous images of nature in the surrounding French Alps.

RAGGEDY ANN AND ANDY DISPLAY

Raggedy Ann DisplayRaggedy Ann DisplayFor the month of December the display case at La Porte is filled with items from the Raggedy Ann and Andy collection of Branch Librarian Myra Wilson. She came to love these rag dolls through the books which her older sister patiently read to her over and over again. You too can read some of these stories and cultivate your own love for these two kind-hearted characters created for his daughter Marcella by Johnny Gruelle.
