Friends… a Great Beginning!

"A snowball in the face is surely the perfect beginning to a lasting friendship.”
― Markus Zusak, The Book Thief

We didn’t get to make any snowballs this winter, but you can still make a lasting friendship. The Friends of the Maud Marks Library are having their book sale this Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014, from 10 am – 4 pm. (No preview Friday for members) Books, audiobooks, CD’s, DVD’s, magazines and more will be available for purchase in our meeting room off the lobby. Books make great gifts and paperbacks are perfect for traveling. No worries about leaving it behind in the hotel room or by the pool. All proceeds from the book sale benefit the library. So come and see what you can find. And while you are here, ask how you can join the Friends group and begin a new friendship.

Celebrate the African American Heritage!

 (C) 2014 http://static.tumblr.com/oebi3un/E9Sm11is4/wicb_jazz.jpg

This year, the Maud Marks Library has decided to go BIG in celebrating the African American Heritage.  How big?  Jazz Education, Inc. will be here on Friday at 1 PM to play some jazz music perfect for dancing.  Afterwards, we'll make some African masks, jazz collages, and even work together to turn one wall in the children's section into a giant Freedom Quilt.  While working on our projects, we'll munch on food important to African American history.  Join us as we celebrate the contributions of the African American culture.

Interlibrary Loans

Even though Harris County Public Library has over 2 million items available, there are a few we do not have. That’s why we offer a service called Interlibrary Loans. We can request a book or audio book for you from other libraries in the country. It could take a week or longer for the book to arrive so “patience is a virtue.” However, it is well worth the wait for a book that may no longer be available at your local library. Browse our catalog first to make sure we do not have it, and check that it is at least 6 months post publication.  Then you can request it yourself on-line or with a librarian at the library. It’s best to have an email address on your account for notifications.  Due dates can be from our usual 2 weeks to even longer.  Some books can be renewed and some cannot. Don’t give up on that title that you might have remembered from childhood until you give our Interlibrary Loan service a try.

We will be making homemade valentines on Wednesday, February 12 from 4:30-5:30 pm. This program is for school-age children ages 6-11. On Wednesday, February 26 we will doing watercolor painting. We hope you can join us.
