Volunteer ESL Tutors needed

Are you interested in giving back to your community?  The Harris County Library is looking for individuals who are interested in tutoring English As A Second Language (ESL) students at the North Channel Library and other Harris County Library branches.  A training session will be held for potential tutors at the North Channel Library on Saturday, August 28th from 9 am to 12:30 pm.   You do not need to speak a second language in order to help someone learn to read, write, and speak English.  To register for this training session, please sign up at the library and fill out a Workshop Registration Form located at the customer service desk.   For more information, please call us at the library at (281) 457-1631.

North Channel Book Club August Selection

Ray Bradbury, American novelist, short story writer, essayist, playwright, screenwriter and poet, was born August 22, 1920 in Waukegan, Illinois. Known best for Fahrenheit 451 and "The Martian Chronicles," Bradbury also wrote short stories and novels that capture the essence of the “average” life. The North Channel Book Club will be discussing Dandelion Wine, a “semi-autobiographical” account of a summer in a small town. Join the discussion on August 25, at 10 am in the North Channel meeting room.

One Teen Craft to Go

Only one more craft remains in the Teen Summer Reading Program. Join us in the North Channel meeting room on Tuesday, Aug. 3 from 3 to 5 pm to transform a neck tie into a hip media sling. On Thursday, Aug. 5, from 4 until 6 pm, teens and tweens are invited to celebrate the 2010 Summer Reading Program with a pizza party. Don’t forget to log your books. Let one of the staff members know when you have completed your reading to receive your certificate and free book.
