March is Women's History Month

March is Women's History Month,and it's a great time to reflect on all of the ways that women have left their mark on the world. A fun way to learn and celebrate women in history is through the movies, whether you're watching biographies on iconic women, or learning about their struggles through documentaries and historic films. The website lists 50 movies and documentaries celebrating women and their history.

Amelia Earhart, the young aviatrix who won the Distinguished Flying Cross for being the first woman pilot to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean.

 

 

Great Books Discussion Group Meets at the Library

The Great Books Discussion Group meets at the Barbara Bush Branch Library on Monday, February 20 in the WCR Conference Room on the 2nd floor. The group meets the 3rd Monday of each month from 7:00-8:45 PM. The book selection for February is On Evil by Moses Maimonides. Youngest Library Cardholder!

Quentin Macala Get His Own Library CardLibrary customers are getting younger every day! In January, staff at the Barbara Bush Library were pleased to welcome Quentin Macala, son of Gina and Josh, who came to the library at 8 days old to get his own library card! His parents obviously know the importance of getting a young reader off to an early start!! Mom Gina is a former shelving assistant at the library, so young Quentin has a built-in fan club among the staff.

Income Tax Assistance at the Barbara Bush Branch Library

AARP volunteers will be at the library again this year to assist customers in preparing their tax returns.

The volunteers will be here:

Saturday 10:00 am to 4:00 pm

Monday 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm

Assistance is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.  The volunteers are not able to take phone calls.  They will be here through April 16, 2012.

Repeated Friday, Feb. 24, 2:30pm, in the Women's Council of Realtors Conference Room. Summary:  Bit by bit, the ravages of age are eroding Marina's grip on the everyday. An elderly Russian woman now living in America, she cannot hold on to fresh memories, yet her distant past is miraculously preserved in her mind's eye. Vivid images of her youth arise unbidden, carrying her back to the terrible fall of 1941, when she was a tour guide at the Hermitage Museum in Leningrad. Next month's selection: Blood, Bones and Butter by Gabrielle Hamilton.
