Pajama Storytime @ Your Library

As I noted in an earlier blog entry, Fairbanks Branch Library hosted a  bedtime storytime at 7:00 pm on Monday, August 31, to say "aloha" to the end of summer vacation.  Children were encouraged to wear pajamas and slippers to the storytime and many of the Fairbanks Library staff wore their pajamas and slippers and robes all day to celebrate.  Please look at the branch photos section to view several photos we took of the staff wearing their pjs (check out those bunny slippers!), and of the children (more bunny slippers!!), and myself during storytime.  Guess I need to get some bunny slippers!

Disaster preparation experts from the Harris County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management will offer a free hurricane preparedness workshop at the Fairbanks Library on Saturday, September 19, at 2:00 pm. They will show you what items should be included in your disaster emergency kit and how to set up your supply checklist. They will also explain what steps you should take if you are ordered to evacuate, show you your evacuation routes, and give you helpful phone numbers that you will need in case of a hurricane. In addition, they will teach you how to make a disaster plan for your family and how you can best protect your family and home. They will also answer questions from the audience. These workshops are open to the public and everyone is encouraged to attend.

Summer Reading Programs are for adults, too. While Lisa Sprenger’s child was participating in a library activity, Lisa had some time on her hands and used it to sign up for the adult Summer Reading Program, ReaderNation. She never expected to win a $50 gift card for participating. All she had to do was sign up online and list at least 4 books that she read over the summer. As a result, she was entered in a random drawing for the gift card. She is definitely going to participate again next year, because she considers reading to be relaxing and enjoyable.  And with ReaderNation, it can be even more rewarding.

New Laws May Affect YOU

The Fairbanks Library takes seriously our responsibility to keep you informed. That’s why the librarian has a bulletin board in the lobby for posting news items that may affect you. One of the items on the bulletin board right now is a list of new state laws that go into effect on September 1. Some of these are:
