Primary Elections March 2

Ballot boxDemocratic and Republican primary elections will be held on March 2.  Early voting ends February 26.  Your Harris County libraries have 3 election-related resources for you: the League of Women Voters (nonpartisan) Voters Guide, sample ballots, and early voting locations.  These resources are also available over the internet using the links in the previous sentence.  Voters will cast ballots for all 32 U.S.

Oscar Voting @ Your Library

The staff here at Fairbanks Branch thought we would like to do something a little different this year regarding the Oscar nominations.  Rather than just share among ourselves our preferences for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Director, we want you to vote for those categories, too.  We have a new display of books that have been turned into movies, "Books on the Big Screen," and there is a jar in which to place a completed ballot.  The ballots are available at the front desk (where you check out items and ask questions), so just ask for a ballot, circle your choices for the the four categories, and drop it in the jar.  After the awards are announced on March 7 at the big ceremony, I will blog here as to who won according to the tally of your votes.  See you soon at Fairbanks Branch and don't forget to get your Oscar ballot and vote!

Harris County Library History

Archives exhibitThe Harris County Archivist has gone through numerous old photos, newspaper clippings, etc., and put together a display of the history of the Harris County Public Libraries from 1921-1939.  Please stop by and check out the display in the Fairbanks Branch.  It includes a narrative of the history of the library system during that period and many pictures, including some of the Fairbanks Library in 1930 and some amazing old bookmobiles.

February Evening Storytime @ your library

The Fairbanks Branch Library family evening storytime for February is scheduled for Monday, February 22 at 7:00pm in the library's meeting room.  This month we will share stories with themes celebrating Valentine's Day and also Chinese New Year.  Since this new year is ruled by the tiger, you can expect a tiger to be in at least one of the stories.  So, put a tiger in your tank and see you on Monday the 22nd!
