Help With Income Tax Forms

Tax formIt’s time again to fill out those pesky income tax forms. Fortunately, AARP volunteers trained by the IRS will once again be at the Fairbanks Library 3 days per week to help people complete and file their federal income tax forms. There are no age or income requirements for receiving help from the volunteers. They will be here from February 1 through April 13, Mondays from 1 pm - 5 pm, Tuesdays from 1 pm - 5 pm, and Saturdays from 10 am - 2 pm. The volunteers offer assistance only in person (not by telephone) and only on a first come, first served basis. (Appointments are not possible.)

Test Stress?

TestDo you have to take a standardized test sometime soon? Are you having trouble getting your hands on a study guide for the test? Never fear; Learning Express Library is here. Learning Express Library is a database available through the Harris County Public Library web site. It has practice tests for the GED, SAT, ASVAB, THEA, real estate licenses, and many, many other exams. Simply go to the Harris County Public Library databases page and click “Learning Express Library” in the “Education & Libraries” category. If you are outside the library, you will need to enter your library card number at this point.

Holiday Movies

With the observance of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday on Monday, January 18, the Harris County Public Library branches will be closed for that day.  In case you want to take advantage of the holiday to watch some new or favorite movies, please visit the Fairbanks branch on this Friday or Saturday and check out some of our DVD and VHS movies.  We have a sizable collection and I bet you can find some fun films to make your holiday entertaining.  Movies are just one of the many services provided @ your library.  Have a safe and relaxing holiday!

Thank you, Friends of the Library

“Unsung heroes,” that’s what the Friends of the Library are. In 2009 alone, the Friends of the Library provided a toy box, plants for the flower beds, paint for the window mural, funding for children’s programs, new library signs, two video games, book displayers, bookends, book bags, BOOKS, and lots and lots of refreshments. And all they got for their efforts was this:

Good Reads for Brrr! Weather @ Your Library

It certainly has been a different winter season in Houston--snow in December and freezing weather this weekend.  These are times that it is good to curl up with a good book in your chair or on the sofa and let reading take you to other places in your mind--like a warm beach somewhere!  I encourage you to visit Fairbanks Branch Library and let us help you find some good books to read.  For our younger readers, we have two special displays of picture books--'Tis the Season' and 'January is Hug n' Cuddle Month'--which have books just perfect for sharing.  If we do not have the books you want, then let us interlibrary loan them for you.
