Hello, Goodbye, How are you?

Officially, we now are holding two English as a Second Language (ESL) classes a week now here at Stratford.  Mondays and Wednesdays from 5-6 pm. These classes are free and currently have a few openings.  If you or anyone you know might interested in attending, please call us at (281) 426-3521 for more information.

Harris County Homeowner Disaster Recovery Program

The Harris County Homeowner Disaster Recovery Program (HDRP) is a voluntary program to assist homeowners who reside in Harris County but outside the City of Houston, whose homes were affected by Hurricane Ike by providing financial assistance to repair damage and when necessary reconstruct home.

There was a funeral and body viewing of Edgar Allen Poe on October 7, 2009 in Baltimore, Maryland.

Rather timely for the upcoming Halloween Holiday, Baltimore, Maryland has finally done a send-off for Edgar Allen Poe that he has always deserved.  Known for the mysterious and macabre, Poe has bee fought over by five cities trying to lay claim on him; Richmond, Philadelphia, Baltimore, New York and Boston. However, Baltimore has the body, which is 9 tenths of the law. Read more in the Baltimore Sun about it.

The American Library Association American Library Association celebrates banned book week banned book week each year. This year the week began September 26 and goes through October 3.     

There are 68 books which were banned from libraries and schools in 2008-2009. Have you read any of them? I 'm sure you will be surprised about which books are listed. Check out the complete list of books since the year banned books were first celebrated in 2005. You will probably be surprised about which books are listed. To add a little humor, here are some quotes from some familiar authors:

The Friends of the Library book shelves have been relocated in a new spot in the library. Why? you may ask. We have acquired a new display cabinet that needed a "home" from another Branch. It now sits in the place where the Friends of the Library book shelves once stood. The display cabinet is lockable and is lighted. We hope many of our customers will want to share some of their hobbies or collections as displays in the cabinet. We are excited and like the new look. Come in soon to see the change.
